Hello all,
I put some LEDs in my handguards and a few people have commented on them so i thought i do a little write up. It is by no means an idea original to me - i first saw them on a very fast black bike that flashed past me one night. I think it was a GSXR or ZX8R and it had them mounted in the mirrors. To fit them in the GS mirrors would have been too much like hard work so i went for handguards instead
Firstly parts -
The lights themselves come as waterproof sealed units that are contained within a sort of rubber grommet so they can be pushed into place. I got these off eBay seller boltonbits for a tenner...

These are wired from the Aux/Sat Nav socket on top of the battery.
The aux plug was cheapest from the BMW dealership at £12 Part No. 83 30 0 413 585
Then it was just wire, some connectors and a bit of heatshrink to tidy things up.
Holes drilled in plastics and then wires fed through and cabled tied to handguard metalwork before joining the main loom leading from each side. The holes recommended are 20mm in diameter, 19mm for a firmer fit
I used a forstner bit which i think was easier than a standard centred wood bit.
With BarkBusters the lights will point up ever so slightly, the LEDs have quite a wide throw so not really a problem. On BMW guards they sit level. They do throw a little light backwards -
- if this bothers you then a little paint / tape will cover this.
With regard to wiring the BMW plug comes with three wires. 1 - Negative, 2 is a timing wire (not required so i sealed this off) 3 - Positive. The LEDs came with a white (negative) and a black (positive) wire.
As they are connected to the aux these lights will stay on for about 60 seconds after the bike is switched off, handy for doing chains at night...
Best wishes,
S
