I just purchased the large Givi top Box for my 1200GS and was shocked to learn that the maximum speed recommended for travelling with the top box is 120 kph (approx 75 mph). Anyone noticed their top box coming loose or falling off at faster speeds.

Cheers

It says this with the standard BMW topbox as well. I've done 120mph (on a private road:P ) with no ill effects.

Take it back !

Max speed for Givi's

I had an E50 top box and two E45 panniers on my ZZR-1100. I think the recommended speed was around 85MPH then IIRC.

120+ was no problem on the monster ZZR with panniers fully loaded, unless it was windy!

Obviously, Givi aren't going to recommend a high speed when you are effectively altering the handling characteristics of your bike by loading extra weight at a point where it has an effect upon the balance of the machine.

This is of course, just personal opinion based upon my experience with one bike, and shouldn't be taken as a recommendation(!)

Have fun

The top box should be travelling at the same speed as your bike when it does not it has fallen off

These statements (like the ones with the BMW system panniers) are just for legal indemnity. What they are saying is, if you happen to travel at 180 mph with the top box on, and it flies off, then it's your own fault, and we are not liable. It's not a reflection of ability, but legal liability.

I just read this, and I'm shocked:eek: Do you mean you travel faster than 70MPH?? You some kinda maniac? :D
I've got a huge GIVI topbox, and did over 800 miles back from the Picos at full pelt last year, whilst it was overloaded. Never had a problem. The only problem I've got with my Givi is that I snapped the key (which is crap quality metal), and can't find anyone to cut another, so will have to order it through the dealer I suppose.

I've got a E36 case I'm going to put on the GS, I've used it on my previous bike (blackbird) at 140+ with no problem so I suspect the max speed is a litigation protection/warning. Similar statements appear on BMW luggage and even on the swing arm of varederos etc.

An empty top box can affect handling and did on my blackbird but it smoothed out as the speed increased.

Weight in the topbox had a more dramatic effect and made the bike top heavy and the front very light, OK for wheelies but a bit dodgy on fast twisties.
I imagine the GS will have similar problems as the Givi plate sets the box quite far out at the back, certainly beyond the rear wheel.

Givi fastening seems quite secure and I've never had the box come loose provided I make sure the catch snaps firmly and all the way.

Seen 130 on my 1150 with the box in place.

That's was while overtaking a line of GS's all doing a silly speed down the A40 towards Llandovery I think.

(Part of the first Baskerville hall ride out)

I was also riding without the screen at the time

I have a GIVI E46 topbox. I rode from Geneva to Calais on the Autoroute. Rarely dropped below 100mph. No problems with security or handling despite filling it way over the recommended capacity.

I've owned most recently a K1100RS, an R1100RT and now the R1200GS, all have been fitted with a maxi 52ltr givi box, all have sustained speeds in excess of 100 mph and none have suffered obvious stability problems or let go of the box, as previous respondents have stated, the rec max is for legal indemntiy purposes and not a safe maximum speed at which the box can be fitted and used IMHO.
