Greetings on this cold Friday afternoon,in a few weeks my wife and I will be taking the car to Maroc for our allowed 6 months.During this period the plan was to be to leave the car in Tangier Airport carpark and fiy to the UK for a week or so to feed the cat and then return.

I have read on another forum that I will not be allowed to exit Maroc without the car!
Difficult when travelling by air, does anyone know a way out of this or will the cat have to starve?

Cheers.

My understanding is that unless there are exceptional circumstances (such as illness or injury etc.) you must leave with the vehicle.

Correct.

It can be done, but not legally.

I suspect Malaga airport is going to be the only proper option, short of buying a 2nd hand Moroccan car and using that over there after flying in......it will obviously mean two more ferry crossings, but Malaga is less than three hours from Tangiers even including the crossing.

I've never been to Tangier airport, but having sat in various vehicles for up to 12 hours inside the supposedly secure dock area I'm not sure I'd want to leave a car at the airport anyway

EDIT......One of you could go back with no probs......that might be the simplest solution? :nenau

Dont fancy the Malaga option much, there is some banter with the folks on Horizons Unlimited about leaving cars/bikes at Marrakech Airport.Customs will take the V5 and keys until one returns-sounds easy perhaps not!

For information Tangier Airport is great, new car park 30MDH/24 hours all secure.:nenau

Are there any restrictions on the number of ferry crossings between Maroc and Spain I can do in the 6 months?
Cheers.

can't see why there would be they are in the business of selling tickets, however customs might get very interested in what your doing....

cue the rubber glove smiley....

you'll find that hard to say with someone's hand up your hatchback...

I lead a tour to Morocco in 2005, where one of the participants wanted to leave his bike in Marrakesh and fly home for his brothers wedding in the middle of the tour. We went to see the British Consul who arranged for us to have a chat with customs. They were in fact quite helpfull and they mentioned having to pay the Douane (import duty) to leave it there. When we explained that all he wanted to do was go home for the wedding, then return a few days later and ride it home on his own, it was then waived. Expect to spend the entire day talking this over with customs and you MAY be lucky. Going home to feed the cat my not be a valid excuse though.

Alternatively, take the car back to Spain and fly home from Gibralta or Malaga. The other option is that ONE of you will have to stay in the country with the car. :nenau

Thanks for the reply,do you know if there are any restrictions on how many times i can go back and forth on the ferry WITH THE CAR within the 6 month import allowance?
Cheers.

feeding the cat for a week is unlikely to sustain the animal for the remainder of the six months. See above re: cattery.

Methinks you worry too much, my old workmate who retired and took off in a motorhome has spent this winter on a campsite in Morocco. Wifi is not available where he is so he was unable to seek advice from internet based forums about this tricky subject. Irresponsible fool that he is Charlie and his wife jumped on a plane at Christmas and came home to visit friends and family for ten days with absolutely no issues.

It is correct that the authorities check that vehicles that enter do subsequently leave again but probably only not that often.

You'll find it far harder to leave via a land border without the vehical than an airport. So long as you have a return flight ticket and a good excuse you should be fine:thumb

I think I will pay a visit to the customs at Tangier Airport before buying flights and have a chat, also will try Tangier Med.
Can you imagine how one would feel standing in the queue at the immigration check with flight tickets in hand and you hear "Ou e la voiture monsieur?"-pay import tax etc.:bow
