The Motorcycling Club's Long Distance Trials have been out of bounds to us due to the lack of suitable 17" tubeless tyres. However, after a couple of years prodding by me and a few others they've decided to allow TKC80s! This is great news. Normally they only allow cat's paw type trail tyres or trials pattern ones, neither of which are available in tubeless 17". Go to www.themotorcyclingclub.org.uk and find out more about the trials and see some photos.

I've done several of the trials, some on an old R80G/S. They're great fun. One at New Year, the Exeter, one at Easter, the Lands End and one in October, the Edinburgh (set in the Peak District, it doesn't go anywhere near Edinburgh anymore). I haven't ridden one for a few years because of my present R80GS Basic Kalahari and its previously unsuitable TKC80s.

The entry comprises bikes and cars, verteran, vintage, classic, old heaps, modern, but no 4x4s. See MCC web site for photos. The Edinburgh certainly includes lots of trails in the Peak District that lots of us will be very familiar with, like Bamford Clough.

You start on a Friday evening, follow a roadbook and ride through the night to the next afternoon. There are 15-20 observed sections, the first few in the dark. It would be fantastic to get a bunch of GSs involved.

Anybody interested?

looks very interesting, will have a better read later

Are you riding the Exeter? I am cheating this time and riding the XR 400.
Starting from Plusha. No 80
May ride the 650 on the Lands end.

I'm not doing the Exeter. I'm out of the habit of riding them because of the tyre thing. Now that I can again, I find myself the unlucky owner of an R80 Basic Kalahari with bald tyres and an annoying habit of running its battery down when it's ignored for a couple of weeks. I might get it sorted for the Edinburgh in October, probably by getting rid of the Basic and going back to an old G/S. Swap, anyone?

I cheated on the Exter about 4 years ago by entering on an XR250 Baja - a fantastic experience - no clouds, freezing temperatures, Sliver Medal (fluffed a restart). Set off from Derbyshire Friday lunchtime, rode through the night, visited a mate in Dartmouth after the finish then on Saturday evening rode back as far as Bristol where I collapsed in a Travel Lodge.

Interested in the Edingurgh altho not sure about using the GS (1200). Used to ride up Bamford Clough on a Bombardier but just got a KTM would that be allowed?

KTMs are certainly allowed, but you have to be careful about the MCC tyre regulations - no clear gaps between the blocks at right angles to the direction of the tread (unless it's a TKC80). Also, I've seen riders of KTMs and the like suffer at the slow speeds some of the tight sections require. And it's a long way down to foot!

Spout (UKGSER name, can't remember his real name - sorry) followed me up Bamford Clough once on his 1150 Adv. Mind you, he's very talented. I've never had a problem on it on an R80 and I'm a Wus.

Does that mean I can claim my GOLD for the LANDS END as I was on bald TK80s :D

I'll keep a look out for you Steve, although we don't usually see much of the cars. Maybe catch up at Haynes?

Whooaa at last something off road in Scotland - the Edinburgh trial looks very interesting and easier than a 800 mile round trip toTimpo's..... although its worth the drive;)

Sadly for you the Edinburgh trial is based around the Peak district witha finish in Buxton. Used to go all the way up many years ago.:(
