MCN group test going on @ mo

I will continue to buy the odd copy for old time's sake!

You see, that's why it's £2.... bods still insist on buying it when the temptation becomes just tooooooo great.

The sport section is still pretty good....

A better bet than MCN (other than to while away a train ride) is the free Motorcycle Monthly. Much the same guff as in MCN, without the sporty bits. You want glossy? Bike, I guess. :beerjug:

The sport section is indeed good! :thumb2

I do wonder at the fate of all these publication's in the fast world of broadband, sky telly, my face & twatter?

Seem's to me, by Wednesday morning it's all chip paper anyway!

Ahhh, the special memories of waiting for the teletext page to come back round, just so you could see the top 3 GP results . .

. . simpler times my friend! :beerjug:

Latest.......Off twitter

sorry for boring tweets al. Nearly high-sided the triumph and got the Versys into 3rd on t back wheel. Better?

YAWN YAWN! :

Wonder if it also does 100000 mph and has 1282838388 BHP and handles like a GixerZZRBusaR1 1000?

how the f@ck can you compare a triumph 1050,and a versy 1000 to an adventure bike? both are pure roadbikes the gs isnt, granted most of them never see dirt ....

Well you answered your own question there :thumb

I tested the MTS and Tiger 1050 before buying my GS, a bike I don't really consider an off-road bike either, maybe more suitable for dirt tracks than the others but like most owners I don't ride off-road in the true sense of the word.

The GS works as an allrounder, and that is what the Tiger and Versys are, as will be the new Honda - which is a bike I will look at as a possible GS replacement.

The GS to me is a big comfy tourer suited to all types of road, which is why I bought it, I was not looking for a bike by "type" I look for a bike that suits my needs, these needs cross the rather shite classifications magazines, manufacturers and it appears some owners try to label them with.

You could even compare an MTS to a Fireblade if you fancy a bike to hoon about on like a lunatic as they both can do that, you could also compare an MTS to a GS, but maybe not so much an MTS to a Fireblade.

Some bikes cross genres, the GS is one of them and could be viable for someone wanting an "Adventure Bike", a "Touring Bike", a "Commuter Bike".

I look at my requirements and use, which is everything including commuting to work, pottering down country lanes, scaring power rangers on twisty B-Roads and touring Europe - and any bike capable of that lot would be on my list regardless of the bikes "category"

Typical MCN, why test a GS against a Tiger when the bike that is in completion in the Triumph range is the Explorer.
I for one completely discount anything MCN say. They have just caught on that the British Motorcycling public have ditched sports bikes and have caught up with the rest of Europe in embracing "ADV" bikes. They have tested the GS against just about every other bike on the market. I wouldn't be surprised to one day read a test with a GSA v 1975 FSIE; And slate the GSA for being too heavy!

We are of course forgetting there is barely a crap motorcycle out there anymore, makes MCN's job quite tough, I remember when the top sports tackle handled not much better than todays budget commuters.

I can't remember the last time I rode an awful motorcycle, I have owned and tested all sorts over the last 25 years, in the last few years everything has been half decent - i.e. if someone offered to fuel it up for me for free I would be hooning round quite happily.

Just seen the new Versys - gotta be a contender for ugliest bike of the year, I was unmoved by the pictures, but in the flesh it is awful IMO. It should be better than the ageing Tiger, but who knows, I liked the Tiger, suspension was not great, but the only thing that really stopped me getting one was she hated the pillion seat and the luggage is a bit small.

If I were a tester I could not really fault the GS, if your ignoring purchase price / reliability / Servicing costs / insurance prices etc. and just judging the bike as you find it to ride the only thing I could come up with against a GS is they are a bit vibey (and thirsty) when cruising at speed.

If you consider the bikes as tourers the GS would win hands down for extra's and luggage, it must also win any off-road comparison in this company, and the GS handling is fine, perhaps the only other place the others could win is at the drag strip - which I am sure MCN will probably make a big thing off.

And I just remembered the main reason I bought MCN back in the day, it was for sports results, when the nearest thing to the Internet was Teletext I looked forward to Wednesday to get the low down on the previous weekends GP - in the Lawson / Gardner / Mamola days this was the only way to keep up.

Ain't that the truth! :thumb
I remember restoring an old Suzuki 20 odd years ago, and MCN was all I had.
Plenty of calls & wasted journey's to breakers up & down the land, but the job got done!
Fast forward 20 years & I restore another old Suzuki, this time with the power of the internet ...... just a better experience all round. :thumb

MCN's key strength was it was up to date (within a few days) whereas the glossy mags were hopelessly out of date.
Like the soaraway Sun & other red top tat, I'm not sure where MCN's future lies!
I subscribed last year bring the cost down & delivered to my door, but only really flicked through it at best. It isn't a source of information anymore, just a comic to read while pushing one out!

Because the Explorer isn't available yet ? :blast

Anyway, here's the vid.

Interesting vid. The main speaker is quite acceptable but the other two don't seem to have a personality between them. How bizarre.

flavor of the month

unless a bike is a genuine pile of shite most rags/mags hype up the latest bit of kit and then slag it off when the next latest and greatest is churned out. How long has the GS been in production in one form or another?
I can not see the "competiton" being around that long.:rob

+1. That versys really isn't a looker is it? I mean the GS is no oil painting, but that Versys :barf

Read the report this week, thing that pisses me off is that during the test - top speed runs, 0 - 100 (and in between) runs and continually test as if it were a sports bike test. Then record mpg as 38!!!!! . I regularly get +50 mpg (do not drive it as a sports bike, but do 'make rapid progress' and would not have bought a GS if I thought it was only going to return 38mpg....

Ignore it - makes very little sence other than Kawasaki had a big advert in this weeks paper.
They did not do an "Adventure Bike" test but a Sports Tourer test where the Kwaks extra power and ability to get to 135mph quicker than the GS was the important factor for them :eek
The fact that the GS had better handling, had significantly shorter stopping distances and could actualy be riden off road counted for very little :augie

in fairness to mcn, if they didn't test it the same as other bikes, then the mpg figures would not be comparable.

they're still morons though.
