MCN Today

He also notes that the LC is the better off-road than the old GS.

I guess that's because of the electronics ? The wider tyres and extra weight can't help.

Ian Pavey's (son of Pavey) conclusion was that the KTM and the BMW were pretty closely matched off road, with the KTM being a bit better for 'expert' riders. He also notes that the LC is the better off-road than the old GS.

It may be better than the old gs, but is it as sturdy????

My issue with it is all the breakable plastic and the cost of repair. I'm assuming that they tested the enduro with the wire wheels?

The cast wheels can be off roaded, but they are more vunerable and cannot be repaired once broken. At least if a spoke snaps it's easy to replace.

Then there is the issue with all the electronics. How well protected are all the connections. See my pic above, I like playing in water and electrics don't.

When all is said and done, BMW keep the rally school employees in a job, it wouldn't be wise to say the old model was better off road would it.

Take it all with a pinch of salt. There are loads of bikes better than my 1150 and I really couldn't give a shit, it's all willy waving.

Yamahontrumpduc v GSA

Have to get me 10 pennuth (10p) in here !

Having test ridden all of the above,I dunno why but I still find me GSA the favorite, notice I didnt say best !

Best for scaring the shite out of me was the Ducati, bloody fast, nice comfy seat, but rattled a lot.

Best for flying the flag,Triumph. But something was missing, think it may have been character !

Best for smoothness acceleration etc,Honda, but still something missing,it lookes a bit too fragile, plasticy I think.

Best for nothing really, the Yamaha, sorry folks, didnt rate it at all ! When I took it back to the Dealer the mechanic asked how I liked it,I said I thought it was shite and he agreed !!! Stated they are horrible !!

Best for me overall, sorry again but it is, (roll of drums ! ) the new GS LC !
Loved it,it just seemed to do everything well and was typically GS but more so.

Now, I didnt go off road on any of the above and only do Roads,Gravel, pot holed shite everywhere and any road that takes me to where I want to go whatever the surface (without looking for trouble ! )
I sold my last GSA (2009 model) with over 24,000 miles in two years which I think aint bad really,I ride whatever the weather and have never wanted to do so before owning the GSA.

To end this saga I must tell you about the KTM.I saw it at the NEC show and immediately liked the looks etc,Orange paint and all.So, I gave my details to be contacted as soon as one was available.
Duly the email arrived to say the Bike was available for demo and I booked a Test Ride with the nearest Dealer.
On a wet and misty morning I turned up at 08.50 for my 9am appointment,a bit early,a bit wet and a bit excited ! :bounce1
The staff arrived and started moving Bikes in and around the site and one even spoke to me and I confirmed that I was indeed there to ride the new model.
As stated above it was a shitty day and very cold.I stood outside the showroom and waited to be admitted as the door was locked,at 9.15 I was still standing outside in the cold shitty weather, staff gone inside, showroom door still locked,so, I got back on my trusty steed and fucked off home !!!!

Best for Hospitality, come in and have a coffee, get warmed up etc, certainly not the KTM dealer I went too,so, no ride on one yet !:eek

Ater thawing out at home I emailed the dealer and explained my disgust,as yet I've had no reply.

Excellent customer service eh !!

Still like to ride one though !:thumb2

Interesting thread,

BMW
I had the luck to ride the LC from the chaps at North Oxford for a full eight hours. IMHO It was impressive with all the bells and whistles but I can't wait until the LC Adventure comes out:thumby:

KTM
Called in at Hemel for info and to book a test, was largely ignored, and told to call back an hour later to speak to someone :eek.
Meanwhile anybody asking about the smaller bikes seemed to be assisted?

I cannot comment about the aftersales of KTM, but BMW especially North Oxford has been top notch.

As always anything written by a journalist is biased tripe, ride them, choose one, and ride it a hell of a lot more;)

Paul

I think the KTM is shite compared to the old 950/990 model personally. It's looks are too soft and I think it's more road going.

Probably faster and handles better blah blah, but I've never been much for race leathers, they make me look like an over stuffed sausage :blast

10p well spent..:thumb2

I think that you do give a sh*t otherwise you wouldn't keep posting comments :D

I don't get this worry about plastics, plastics are bloody good engineering materials, which is why they are extensively used in all modern vehicles. I'd rather have plastics and 20kgs less weight - replacing a few plastic covers is a darn sight easier and cheaper than replacing that good looking, but stupid metal fuel tank on the 1150. All serious off-road bikes use loads of plastic, motocross bikes for example.

The modern electrical connectors are a gazillion times better than the old crap that we had to put up with - if you look at the BMW connectors you will see that all the wires are sealed into the connectors and they all are IP rated.

If you like playing in water you'd like the new LC, the air intakes are much higher up than the ones on the 1150 and the old 1200; they were stupidly placed for an 'adventure' bike.

If you want spokes they are available.

P.S. What's wrong with waving your willy, if you have one worth waving :D

It is way better than the old gs, and incredibly sturdy!!!!

I wish I had all that plastic and don't worry about the cost of repair. They will have tested the enduro with the wire wheels, so no problems there.

The cast wheels can be off roaded, but as an LC owner they can afford to have spoke wheels well At least if a spoke snaps it's easy to replace.

There are no issues with all the electronics as LC riders never ride off road.

When all is said and done, BMW rally school employees are experts, it is clear the model is way better off road than the old ones.

Take it all with a pinch of salt. Every bike ever built is better than my 1150 and I am really fed up with LC owners going on about stale urine, plus they all have bigger willies than me.

Fixed :D

What Callard said....^^^^^

+1 :thumb2

Flipfly.. Your first post was excellent but the latter post was IMHO....Bollocks.

Do you still have a Black and White telly, think unleaded is not as good as 4* and harbour after the days when a pint of mild was 20p.

Move on.... 11xx GS's were good no doubt but.....

Sorry... No offence ment !!

Just doesn't do it for me at all.

Looks like a road bike, much like the Ducati.

The plastics on an mx/enduro bike cost 50-60 a set, I'm sure that a single panel on the BM will cost more than that.

As for giving a shit ref what you lot think, nah, you're wrong, I really don't care.

My bike is a cool as fuck as far as I am concerned and that's all that matters.
What is boring is the talk of big power, superior handling etc etc. A bike is supposed to thrill and feel on the edge. Take a 125 out for a spin. 75mph max, but you feel like you are at 100% and that feels good, it makes you feel alive....and all at 75mph.

I'm sure the LC is 10 times better if power and handling are your criteria. I'm probably just not good enough to use all that performance :thumb2

I have to admit that is a lovely picture of an open road and, a "stationary" 1150!
:nenau

Hard to take a still pic, whilst riding..................haven't perfected that one yet:blast

:D

But from an aesthetic point of view the 1150GSA is one of the best looking GS's ever produced.............IMHO:cool:

Bikes are about 'stirring the soul', so good job we're all different:thumb

really? from honda?

i have no idea, but that seems insanely cheap.

If we're talking Genuine Parts:nenau

KTM/Husaberg - Yes

Honda, not a prayer - more like £300 for a front/rear mudguard, plus headlight cowls and sidepanels for a XR250/400

Plenty of pattern ones available cheaply though surely. Not something you will get on the toilet.

I'm not disputing it's a better bike using the power/handling criteria, but as you say JB bikes are more than just about efficiency. Vfr, phenominal engineering, but I nearly fell asleep on mine several times. The rc30 was a different animal but the rvf failed massively. 916 or 999? To me it's a 916 that stirs the soul. 916 vs panagale (or whatever it's called)? Sorry but it would still be the 916.
