MCN will be publishing a testof the new R1200gs tomorrow.

guys - sad person that i am - i actually bought a copy of mcn to read the review - didn't have the brass neck to read it in my local newsagent - impression i got was that they did not actually test the bike at all - a couple of so called dyno charts suggesting increased power and torque - total waste of £1.95 - the image of the so called test bike had hand guards and LED indicators - no increase in overall weight despite new components for DOHC :augie

"But on the road, as our test back-to-back with the old two-valve version found out, the improvement is significant:"

This is the line I was talking about.

Since the final drive ratio has been changed on the 2010 model I am not surprised by this statement. - Acceleration will be faster

However by doing this the bike will actually need more rpm to attain the same road speed as the previous model.

I cannot see the point in raising the rpm limit, increasing the engine output by 5hp then cutting the road speed by raising the final drive ratio.

Of course all this raising includes a raising of the price.

I must be looking at the wrong web pages and specs. I haven't seen anything on the spec sheets that indicates that the FD ratio has been changed. What are they saying it is now and where is the info coming from?

"Final drive ratio 2.91"

The above quote came from the official BMW press release for the GS's and it's the same as the '09's. Is it a misprint?

There IS a lower ratio 1st gear option of 2.600 listed for the '10's. Is this what he's talking about? Of course the dealers don't know anything about this option either. Just blank stares when I asked about it.

Here's a link to the press release. https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/pres...=9&id=T0069813EN_US&left_menu_item=node__2274

Edit: OK, I went back and read through the press release and found the statement that the FD ratio has changed, but the published FD ratio is the same as on the '09's. There's a misprint in one of the statements, but who knows which? Certainly not the dealers or BMWNA CS reps. I checked with both & they're clueless. The Beemerco really should proof-read their propaganda before they publish it, I guess.

Got this from Balderstons site - so unless I read it wrong

I read this as the 2009 model was 1:2.82

Ideal transmission of power through six-speed gearbox and drive shaft.
Power is transmitted as before by the proven six-speed gearbox with larger bearing diameters and a modified distance between the individual shafts already upgraded technically for the 2008 model year. In the process the gear ratios were once again adjusted and the secondary transmission has been modified from 1 = 2.82 to 1 = 2.91.

Yeah, I know. But if you go to the BMW site and look up the specs for the '09's, it says the ratio is 2.91. I've given up on trying to get an answer from anybody associated with BMW. Nobody seems to know anything about the bikes, all they know is how to fill out sales agreements, it seems.

I think you may be correct -- looked in my book last night '09 model is 2.91:1 so the 2.82 must refer to pre '08 models.

This article says something about a "beefed up gearbox", but as far as I know the tranny is unchanged - except for the phantom 2.600 first gear option that nobody seems to know anything about and isn't mentioned in any of the articles.

the 'enduro' 1st gear ratio is an option on the current GSA, and I have it on mine. it will continue to be the same for the 2010 GSA.

The Lazerus Thread

Another one. This time from Kevin Ash (Ashonbikes.com)
What do we make of this, then?

It would seem to be one hell of an engine. The EXUP valve strangles the engine at point where sound is measured. Maybe this explains the dip
in the graph posted from the D. site(?)

A tech piece to follow (from him, not me).
