Biked home from work Friday evening, parked up and removed the key, steering lock on and handlebars to the right, chained up the bike (R1200GS 08). Sunday morning, time for a bike clean, so I put in the key and released the lock to point the wheel straight ahead. Clean over, bike gleaming, time for a ride out.
The key would not turn in the ignition. Grit in the ignition barrel? WD40 to no avail. Still won't turn.
BMW Emergency Service (nice knowledgeable guy, took almost 4 hours to get here against the promised 90 mins, not his fault) spent an hour and half taking apart the steering lock mechanism and releasing it. Bike now to be booked in for check up.
Anybody else had a similar problem? Searched without luck on the forum.

Not necessarily grit, probably a broken indent lever within the key mechanism. Shit happens.:nenau

A new ignition barrel should cure it.

is there any chance some scumbag has tried to force or break the steering lock.. Not an accusation but i had a bike in the past that someone attacked, they bent the pin that goes from the lock mechanism into the frame, and they attacked it with such force they bent the pin and it wouldnt retract back into its recess meaning no bike and game over until i managed to get a new one. Oh and it wasnt a BMW.......
