Noisy engine on my 93 gs100 (60k) proved to be knackered big end shells, on the right hand side pot. Ive measured everything up, and the crank, conrods etc seem to be in line with makers tolerances/specs etc so its looking like new shells and a few new seals etc (which is better than the purchase of a new crank).
The left hand side shells are perfect. (For the sake of £12 or so,do i change them too ???)

Anyone experienced this before on a airhead ?
30 years with a boxer, and id never even heard of one going pop like this. Sill, there's always the first time.

Proff will probably correct me but the Right hand oilway is at the end of teh line and if she looses oil pressure thats what gets it

I had an R1100S with a perfect left side and a completely shagged non existant bearing in the rights side yet the poor old bugger still ran even with just 2 litres oil in there!

Still have pistons, barrels and heads inc cams and cam carriers all are in Very very good condition inc head studs

Had Sir recently changed the oil filter ?:blast??
It's a nightmare sometimes:( because of different systems..
IF you use the gasket and seal on some bikes it will stop the oil being pressurised and sent around the engine, just letting it bypass the whole fecking system and pumping directly into sump :(

Oh and yes do both sides , plus new bolts are a good idea :)

R1100S?? is that not an oilyhead ???:nenau

Airheads are not as complicated ,, but do have quirks on filter fitments :(

Proff, et al.
No, I havent changed the oil filter recently, although I do change earlier than the manual suggests.
I suppose my main concerns are why it has happened AND where the heck has all the little bits of shell gone. The shells are down to the brass and look like they have been spinning on the journal, courtesy of the little tabs on the shell breaking off, one of which has embedded itself into its notch on the conrod.
Apart from a crank strip out, how do i make sure no crap etc has got into the crank oilways or the mains for instance ?

When mine let loose big style, due to the failure of the O ring and as Proff described, the oil just by passed the engine and went straight back into the sump. I took the lot to Steve Scrimminger and he cleaned and rebuilt the bottom end. He did a fantastic job too. It does mean that the whole lot has to be stripped down and cleaned properely:comfort

Interesting, im calling at Steves tomorrow, on the way to motobins for the spares !
