Doing some work on my newly acquired R80G/S which was previously owned by a mechanic (his words).

I admit to be lulled into a false sense of security by "mechanic ownership" and forgot to be my usual cynical self. :blast

Because someone has trained as a mechanic doesn't make them a good mechanic, or careful, or thorough, or clever etc etc

I won't bore you with the details but some of the stuff I have encountered so far is ordinary to say the least

I am not trained just an enthusiastic amateur but I have 2 important skills: I try to do my best and I recognise the limitations of my skill/experience. Sometimes you've just got to pay.

This rant is to remind everyone not to get sucked in by ambit claims and assess what you are buying based on what you see, not what you are told.

The G/S is not a piece of junk and will eventually become a nice bike. I am getting satisfaction from righting some of the wrongs -although he did say he rebuilt the motor :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I know the feeling. Just about every bolt on the R100GS I just stripped down was over tightened

But at least now I will get to put it back together again with my tube of copper antisieze and torque wrench ;)

goodluck :thumb2

And what torque values will you be using for a lubed fastener...... you see, there are mechanics and there are mechanics.......

+1 I use a 50/50 mix of Copperslip and Loctite so that it doesn't come undone until I undo it, and then it comes out easily. :thumb

Its often better to suss out if the owner is Kosher as well as the bike. I've walked away from many bikes as the owners idea of a nice bike was not the same as mine. The worst was a Professional Musician (Violin if you must know)
whos ad said FSH VGC etc. According to him as the bike did very short trips only, it needed a full service every millenium. His garage also replicated the bilges of the HMS Mary Rose in every detail, I've never seen so much corrosion on a bike.
