does anybody know of a decent mechanic who can do service work on my '93 Gs, apart from the main dealers.

Im in north lncs but done mind a bit of travel.

Try Rainbow Shefield, I know you mentioned no main dealers,
but they don't charge the full BMW rates, and their reputation is second to none
