Have any of you gone from Scorps to Mefo Explorers?

How do they compare?

The Mefo's look to be slightly more suited in the off road department?

I'm wondering how they compare on road? How do they handle / last?

The rear on my 950Adv isn't long for this world and I'm thinking of making the change to a pair of Mefo's. I've read good things about them but I do quite a few road miles so if the road handling is too compromised I'll just stick to Scorps ........

Cheers in advance!

I can only quote on behalf my fellow 990adv.R riders who have them on and they seem to like them. Road handling is actually pretty good compared to scorps with added plus side that you get plenty more offroad capability. I was going to get them too but 150-70 size was out of stock. Ordered Heidenau Scouts with silica for colder temperatures instead which are just about same. Lets see how they work through winter. I´m thinking to put some studs on them...lets see.

I used a Mefo rear and TKC 80 front for about 8,000 miles two up with luggage when my wife and I toured South America and North America.

The Mefo was excellent on the gravel and tarmac that we encountered. I had to change to Scorpions in Chile and hated them - they didn't like the weight.

The next opportunity to get Mefos was in the USA. The Mefo front lasted only 4,000 mile and cupped badly; the rear did not last as long as my first one and the blocks started cracking around the carcass (internet chat mentioned a bad batch of tyres). I changed these for Heidenau K60 front and rear and these performed and lasted well.

Lastly I've done 4,000 miles on the Mitas as mentioned by Timpo. These worked really well in Morocco (pistes) and on dry tarmac but I don't know how they will be with a load.

So: I don't like a Mefo front but if this is used with a TKC 80 it will be fine with a Mefo rear.

I like the Mitas E07 (front and rear) too. :thumb2

Hello

I used a set of super explorers and this is what I found:

Excellent tire for road and off road. Pretty great in all conditions.

However, my tyre started cracking and was replaced by Mefo under warranty.

Apparently you need to run this tyre at a much higher pressure than normal, or the tyre will overheat and break apart.
I didn't believe it at first, but at 2.5bar like recommended, all seems to be fine.

Thanks for that, I've just fitted one to the rear of my 950.... (running TKC front)

I have a Mefo explorer on the back of my 950A. It has been on a while now and all seems fine. It is definitely better off road than the Scorpion it replaced.
I expect you know that Simon Pavey`s lot run Mitas tyres at their off road skills place. I was there in April; I was impressed by how well the tyres worked (but I am no expert off roader!):beerjug:

thats interesting, 2.5 bar is only 36 psi and I dont think I have ever put less than that in ANY rear tyre on any bike, what do you normaly put in a back tyre?
I am running 36 front and 42 rear on my 990 for the road and its fantastic. If it drops to 36 it starts to get a bit squirly

I am running the Mefo's front and rear. Very happy with them. Done 3000 miles and probably 50% left.

They are suprising good on the road. I ran the OE tyres round the Alps last year, and the Mefo's this year. I was still scraping my toes with no signs of anything scary with the Mefo's.

The front doesn't violently head shake if you let go of the bars either with the Mefo's

Cheers
