Walked up the Meikle Bin today ,done it several times before and had seen the bit of wing lying on the top of the hill but had never seen the lump which lies down the hill a couple of hundred feet .The plane was supposedly a Fairey Firefly so the engine should be a Rolls Royce Griffon ,we managed to burl it over with the help of a passing Sasquatch. It crashed in the early fifties Im told, chrome on the cam followers looked mint for lying out on a hill for 60 years .

Nice one. There's a RR V-12 lying up in the hills near me too, came out of a Mile Master that crashed in 1941. There still a fair impact site with loads of alloy bits & pieces lying around too. And just over 1km away lies the frame of a bi-plane that came down in 1939. Loads of them around here I have still to find.

Great excuse to get up in them there hills!! :)

Is that the one up at Clachnaben!! I'm sure young Mr Cooper mentioned there was one up there!!

Andy,

yes it's not far away from the "Clach" I believe there are a further 3 or 4 in the area too including a 1950's jet over near Birse.

That would be an F-100 Super Sabre. Pal o' mine was at it many years ago and managed to collect a fair few bits.
It was being ferried over from the States via Keflavik to, I think, Fairford, when it experienced difficulties and was forced to crash land. It was with a flight of 6. The rest made it OK!!

There was a jet crashed in a field near my house when i was a young lad, remember seeing the two crew ejecting right in front of ma house and the plane hit the ground about 5 miles along the road. Don't think there be any wreckage there now but was fair excitin at the time..

That would be this one, a Jaguar, which came to earth near Meikle Coull:-

On June 1st 1981 T.2 XX828/P of 226 OCU crashed 8 miles E of Kirriemuir, Tayside, Scotland after a birdstrike shattered the canopy. Fragments of the canopy were ingested by both engines, causing both to fail. The crew ejected successfully.

I had an amble around the Liberator wreckage near the "Fairey lochs" at Gairloch.
Quite distressing actually !
