just got my donor seats back from Melvin Hunter and they do look very smart. I've not had an opportunity to test them for extended comfort yet, but if they really are as comfortable over distance as they look and feel then the value Mr Hunter offers is remarkable. Service is good too with turnaround within a week and his 'phone number is 0274 665203.
He does bang on a bit about the Nutty Professor though, Simon E this and Simon E that, the experience was obviously memorable, but it convinced me; if it's good enough for Mr E then it's good enough for me. And it seems to be so.

wrong 'phone number , sorry

MH's number should be 0247 665203
apologies, I was trying so hard to be funny at another's expense I got it back to front.

OK, looked at the site but how much are these seats?

I gotta stop spending money on the bike. This BB is costing me a fortune:(

MH seats

I've got a 'Melvyn' seat on my Ad. He made it up from the original high one with the gel inserts. It does cut out a lot of vibration from the Remus set-up, but then I've still got the wrong can bracket fitted. It's comfortable enough on long jaunts.

I'm thinking of going over to Dinsmore on Sunday morning to meet some other members. Anyone with an Ad. is welcome to try it/borrow it, if they get in touch.

I am stupid

missed out a six...

it is, deep breath...

and now I am going to pull my own head off.

Ah Tim . . . always on the prowl for the double entendre!

Yes, I can vouch for Melvyn's seats. I couldn't ride for longer than two hours without terrible bum and back ache. Now, thanks to Melvyn my bum never hurts (suggestiveness just for you Tim). And I think my seat looks very nice!

how much?

don't know what MH charged SE because they are all custom built to order and you can specify whatever style/colours/density etc you want but mine looks similar to SE's, has gel inserts front and rear and cost less than half the price of a Corbin....

That's a bit evasive!

Melvyn charges £135 for the "job" regardless of the fact he's doing two seat units and £35 per gel insert or £60 for two. So you can have your seat resculptured and recovered for as little as £135 or for as much as £195 if you want gel front and back.

Melvyn uses gel mesh rather than gel pockets. These are much better than gel pockets/pads. He also only uses vinyl as he won't work with leather and doesn't believe leather can ever be 100% waterproof. He has about three choices of black fabric (plain, basketweave, and hide). He can do coloured fabric if you want and he has beading colours to suit the colour of the bike. My seat is in basketweave with hide side panels. The basketweave also adds to the general comfort.

I had him widen the rear of the rider's seat on mine, raise the back to make it more level with the pillion seat, and raise the front to make the seat more horizontal than the OE (which noticeably slopes forwards). All-in-all (and I've got the seat on the high seting) it makes the seat sit an inch and a half higher than the standard seat on the high setting. With lowered footpegs as well I'm in seventh heaven in terms of comfort. The upright position (I've got 35mm bar risers as well) makes me steer more motorcross style than hanging-off knee-out and it works fantastically with Metzeler Tourances. I'm looking forward to WP suspension being fitted in the Spring to raise the back up another inch and then the only crims over 6'8" tall will be able to steal the thing!

The best mod Melvyn did for me was the widening of the seat at the rear so that my bum fits wholly on the seat and weight isn't centred on the coccsyx as with the standard seat. You'll notice in the picture above that the seat is clearly a tight fit betwen the pannier rails. Look at a standard seat and you'll see at least a 1 inch gap between the seat and the rails each side.

Anybody who wants to try out the seat is welcome to do so at any place where we meet up. We'll just swap 'em over and you can have a go.

Melvyn needs your seat(s) to do the job. If you can't be without your seat for a week, then I have spare standard seats to lend if anybody can collect and return.

BTW Just coz I'm a lanky git don't let that put you off. Melvyn actually specialises in seat-height reductions by cutting away excess foam, replacing it with higher density foam and gel and leaving you with a lower seat but still more comfortable.

Melvyn has done so many of these now that he has a standard fix - mine is fine - I bought a secondhand rider and pillion set for seats for £70 and had them refurbished.

Because the gel is firmer expect to sit a little higher than before

Will the rack plate extension thingy and therefore BMW top box still fit after the seat improvement?

I remember when looking "Jonny Boxers" flash Corbin seat that this no longer fitted.

Cheers

After six months thought, I decided to go ahead and order a saddle. Only took ten days from posting my seats to Melvin to receiving them back. What a difference. Probably been said before, but why couldn't BMW produce a seat like this in the first place. If anybody is thinking about changing their seat, speak to Melvin and order one. It is 2/5 the price of Corbin and Sargant. The seat fits with a Givi 50lt top box and Zega panniers. Stop thinking about, and do it. The only regret I have is that I did not get one sooner.

Done it as well !!

I won £107 in a weekly lottery, and was planning on putting it towards the Barn door (Aeroflow screen) However, with Spain 5 weeks away I went up to Coventry and met Mr Hunter !! Seat sold. I ride back to Bristol on a bit of Foam and merv has my seat.
Had some funny looks riding home on a pad foam !

With 2000 miles in 2 weeks had to be done to prevent her indoors barking at me. This site is starting to cost me money :D

The threads on the seat really sold it to me, and seeing what he does to them was game set and match.
He had my seat Seat, and allowing for Bank Hols, I should have it by Friday coming. Good stuff

Did you just turn up on spec, or had you pre-arranged to meet him? I'm probably going to get mine done, but thought I'd discuss it in person and then leave it with him.

Well wev'e been telling you for long enough, I often wonder what the fascination is with Corbin & sargeant.

Steve:

Melvyn works from home out of a converted shed in his back garden. In fact, all he does is cut out the foam and gel. He leaves the cover fitting to a couple of "employees" working (ahem) night shifts.

So, he's in most of the time but it's best just to call ahead and let him know you'll be calling in. Don't plan on it being a quick 5-minute chat. Be warned: Melvyn loves to talk!

Simon
