I've just bought a Garmin Etrex which I want to use for trail riding, Mountain Biking and walking etc... The mapsource city select mapping is ok if you want to plan a road route but it is very difficult to input waypoints and routes for 'off road' routes as it does not show information such as footpaths, bridleways or contour lines.
A solution to this is a great program called Memory-map which imports OS map images and then allows you to waypoint all of the areas that you are interested in. You can also create routes, tracks, and view the terrain map in relief as well as 2D, then download/upload to your GPS.
Take a look at www.memory-map.co.uk
P.S Cracked copies of the program and maps are available on the common file sharing programs, or you can pay £39 a section and there are 12 sections covering the uk.
