Father in law has superb mesh pc tower

Xp athlon64x2 2100 512 ram
Had blue screen

Reinstalled xp Now bit of a mess
loves the case (tower)
Question

Worth keeping case and upgrading to win 7 , increase the ram and or mother board

Or bin the lot and get a new one

its not worth upgradint tbh, its old kit. if he likes the case, keep it as they tend to be universal, but a new mobo will require ore modern ram and a new dual or quad cor processor.

its only worth upgrading if you do it within 6 months or so or the kit stops being compatible. Upgrade a new mobo, hard disk, ram and processor for about £250

New motherboards use a different type of power connectors.... so you would need a new power supply... gonna be cheaper to get a new machine... and much easier....

Install Ubuntu, it's free, easy to use, comes with firefox, open office, games, music and video players already installed. The old machine will fly and if you need any more software it's all there for free.

as all above but if you have re installed and it was still pants with xp you should try to find out why first,is it software or hardware prob.win 7 want min 1gb of ram and if you use ultimate it then wants 1gb more if you want to use it in xp mode. is the HD corrupted if so cheaper to replace and then he gets to keep the case!!:D

Depends on what he wants to do on it. If XP is still blue screening after a clean install then I would suspect that something hardware related is dying (probably memory) and getting a new operating system (Windows 7 or Ubuntu) won't fix that.

If he's happy with it otherwise and a clean install of XP is working then upgrading the memory to 2Gb would make a lot of difference. If you do go down the route of deciding on upgrading to Windows 7 then you'll need that 2Gb at least to keep it happily usable.

Otherwise, as others have said, cases are generic but just about everything inside the case will need replacing, at which point you're proably better off looking at a new PC.

+1. Another vote for Ubuntu for old and new machines.
