Messed up badly. Quickly drained a little oil with the wrong bolt without thinking...

Filled a quarter quart oil too much on my r1100gs. Didn't have the tools remove the engine guard and mistook the hex bolt under the left cylinder for a oil drain. Tilted the bike and got the oil out easy enough, but when I went to put the bolt back in it wont go more than half way in. How badly did I fuck up? Anyway to get the bolt in without a disassembling the cylinder? Learned an important lesson to not muck about without thinking.

Looks like you ( actually strike that ) someone else is going to have to take the head off to reattach the cam chain guide. Steptoe might be feeling charitable and he is SW London I believe ?

Don't ride it over there though.

Good luck :(

:blast:blast:blast If you mistook that bolt for the engine oil drain plug I would not recommend you attempt to fix it yourself, As you live in London I would contact Steptoe to sort it for you, don't attempt to start it or turn engine over.

My thoughts exactly

A syringe & hose in the filler hole works better :)

Anyhow how was that ever oil drain bolt :blast

Never mind, have a great Xmas & send it to Steptoe by trailer

Just guess ... I think this bolt goin true chain glide so there small window beside with 2 bolts if you open that might be able to move with finger up or down till fit bolt . Now that just guess

It's where parts 7,8 & 9 have gone that would worry me as there may be way of lifting the tensioner blade with a little ingenuity. But those washers...!!

Steptoe's your man. Brace yourself... :-)

Id say it's worth a bit of jiggery pokerie

Now you've got an image of what goes where it should help you understand how you'll need to jiggle it

Well I'm on move so no access to pictures , you should see chain and glider under its plastic , so feel and try move slightly up it will be under tension

As well if you put light true window you might be able to see true bolt hole how far out and where to move

You might want to subscribe. It only costs a few quid to be called a numpty officially :D
Good luck with it.

Take the rocker cover off and with a long stout screwdriver move the tensioner blade upwards until the bolt pops back in place.

Do not rotate the engine or you could get the spring loaded tensioner jammed.

And i wouldn't stress out about overfilling the engine (unless a couple of litres :D). If it has too much oil it'll deposit it in the airbox, which has an oil sump of it's own complete with a drain plug

You've got a long section of unthreaded rod on that bolt - I would try putting a smallish screwdriver in first at the bottom of the hole and seeing if the 'eye' of the tensioner is still visible to be hooked up. The washers might be a problem as you say. From pics Ive seen elsewhere it's pretty tight in there so you might be lucky and they're still in place. As others have said, there is tension but not a massive amount I would guess at that point. You could always stand the bike upside down of course. FYI - there is an oil return pipe that runs down the left by the oil sight glass and terminates with a 22mm nut - that's a good place to drain if you can't get at the sump plug.

Good luck anyway.

Genuine question - are'nt the 2 washers ( 7 & 8 ) going to need to be reattached ?

Hey Phooey - good to see you are still about. Give me a ring I lost all my numbers when the house was hit by lightning, everything either got fried or drowned!

maybe instead of the screwdriver you could slide thin piece of metal wide enough to lift the blade and washers together
