Metal mule crash protection

Just checking out the Metal mule webpage and they have up to 40 percent off protection parts for the 650/800gs. Brings the engine bars down to around 150quid.

I would take advantage myuself but I've just brough a set of Stalhkoffers!

Brave bunch we are! I've heard allot of good about Adventure spec! The main thing is they do the job.

I'm currently deciding what to upgrade next! Engine bars are temtping!

Good, they will give you nice large clearance for each side of your bike. Them metal mule ones were to close imo.

imho the metalmule ones are more carefully designed, and the cross beam has just one bolt on each side, no bulky triangular joint..

Im pretty sure they wont work with our sumpguard, to date nothing else will. Thats why we made the crashbars in the first place after realising nobody else's would fit!

Im glad we did as they're our biggest seller. They're been well proven now with at least ten RTW riders and some major offs reported with little damage. We have some very happy customers

I've heard reports from Siberia that the metal mule stuff is not up to the task when put in a real adventure setting

Gunz is correct there is not enough clearance between the MM bars and the plastics. ZippyGser's 800 fell over in the street and landed on the adv-spec bars and they took the force and bent, using up all of the available clearance. He removed the cross brace pulled them back out and he was good to go again. With only one bolt holding the MM cross brace together I wouldn't have much faith in it surviving a decent fall.

For example like this one where Rudimoto demonstrates the strength of the adv-spec bars...

I'd of preferred the wild@heart bars but with possibly 2-months shipping. Plus will it get from Joburg to here is doubtful..unless someone flew it back. Which was a possibility but my eldest bro chickened out using his BA shipment entitlement.

I've slung mine down the road at 30mph on the Ice, and fallen off twice on the Ridgeway. Pervious owner got hit in the rear by a car in Mororcco, and fell off too many times to count as he rode down to Cape Town.

Maybe my bars are a different set as there are two bolts connecting the front crossmember?

I think we can say they are well matched then. As the day Rudiemoto fell off on mine I had fallen off 5 times prior to that. I then, like you threw mine down the road in Austria during the snow and ice resulting in this...

and after darting up with a rattle can were still acceptable for Gunznbombz to purchase.

Take your pick

Two friends recently asked me to fit crash bars / bash plates to new bikes. One was GS800 and Adventure Spec kit, the other was Tenere with Metal Mule bars / plate.

The Adventure Spec kit was top notch and a delight to fit, very high quality, the metal mule kit, in my opinion, was not well designed and didn't fit properly. To metal mules credit they are investigating the problems.

I installed the Metal Mule crashbars a few days ago.
I am quite happy with the result, since the crashbars protrude the least possible distance and so I m still able to pass between cars in a traffic jam.
No problems with the installation whatsoever.

The Jury's out.

They look good, but vulnerable. I'm not sure that they wouldn't bend on impact. Aren't they a bit close to your knees?
