I know that I should already know this but what is the capacity of the standard systems cases as a comparison to this combination.

Ian

I spoke at great lengths to MM before I made my choice.

There are lots of things I like about the MM ones I must, BUT equally so there are lots of things that I do not like either, one on them being the sheer cost!

So in the end I opted for the TT Zegas, 35lt and 41lt with the silver finish frames, for just over £500.

We will have to see in the fullness of time how good they really are. But IMHO I do not think that the MM's are £300's worth better.

I would have to agree. I really like the look of the MM too but I cannot justify the extra cost.

One question : Whats the finish like inside the Zegas, I have seen problems where all your kit/clothes etc ends up silver/white from the aluminium. Is that the case or are they anodised/coated inside?

I bought the Zega panniers for a 1150 GS Adv. originally, went on without any problems whatsoever. I painted the inside of the boxes with epoxy paint to prevent the staining off the aluminium.
The same boxes are now on a 1200GS with new frames, again, fitting was no trouble at all. The paint is holding up well and hasn't needed redoing.
The 35 lt. box is mounted full time, I run it on the offside, opposite the exhaust only mounting it on the exhaust side when I need both boxes.
The 1200 makes a great shopping trolley! (Bait!)

It is bare aluminium, so yes clothes could get discoloured I suppose. But in saying that I never put stuff in panniers unless it is in some form of inner bags.

If you are going to use the panniers everyday, especially on UK gritted roads, I would therefore expect them to go very shabby in a short period of time. So the finish could be important and warrant the extra cost. :nenau

But mine wont be, and of course they will be polished everynight, regardless. :D

For my 1150GSA OEM ones I bought the very excellant Cee Bailey bags from the States. Quite expensive I seem to recall by the time everyone and their dog have taken duties, VAT & UK carriage costs etc :spitfire

But this time I have bought the TT Inner bags, at £34 per bag, it was still a cheaper option than the MM's. And I would have still needed to buy bags for those as well. :thumb

Twenty quid will buy a roll of tough vinyl (all colours available). About an hour spent on each sticking it on and hey presto no discoloured ali panniers.

Thanks Mike, I did actually stumble across this thread when I was seaching for more info on the Zegas, nice mod. :thumb

Other than the fact that it stops you from polishing them. ;)

Still no reply after a total of four polite emails. I should really phone but I'm sure that would be a bad move considering my present frame of mind. High costs is one thing, but piss poor aftersales is a killer. Good kit but by pretty poor attention to detail and completely non existant aftersales ethics. I'll paint the frames myself and do the job right. Up yours MM :D

:

Alan, where did you get yours from for that price? The price on the Touratech UK site is currently £570.

Bob

The £570 price is for the pre puck mounted set, I went for the self assembly set and saved some money.

To be fair, it is not the most easy job in the world to do. But after speaking to people on here that had bought the pre mounted ones, they were not to happy about the fit.

The key is having enough time to do it, it is NOT a five minute job....oh no!!! :(

Remember of course what I was always told when I first started apprenticeship, measure twice....cut once:thumb2

The first hole is the hardest one to drill...oh errr Matron

UPDATE

Just looked on the newly designed UK TT website and it looks like they have increased the prices, quite dramatically in some cases :nono No pun intended :augie

Looks like I bought mine just in time then, even if I did have six puck screws missing. :( :D

MM v Zega..

At the Bike show in 2005 I had a good look at the MM gear. Liked it a lot but the price put me off as the TT Zega's were about £150 cheaper.

I ordered my Zegas, 35ltr+40Ltr premounted and frames.

Despite a bit of hassle getting the panniers (which was TT Germanies fault, not TT UK's for a change). Fitting them was "Pretty" simple. As far as it was a case of bolts, but I did have to "ease" them onto some fittings, but this was because i have done the first mounting point up too tight to start with.

I eased off all the bolts and whallaaa they needed a little coaxing with the last point and but went on in about 20 mins. The frames have now seen a lot of use and the bike has been dropped lighty but fully loaded once on the panniers and they are still fine. No corrosion on the frames.

I loved the MM attachement/release mechanism, but have found the turn wheel system to be ok, if not quite as easy as the MM one.

It unfortunate to hear so many people having so many problems with them, as I really liked there gear. Hope you guys get it all sortted.
