Metzler Roadtec 01 (advice)

I really liked the Roadtec 01’s, until a few days ago, but tried to get a rear in France as i’d done mine and couldn’t...4 day wait and they even tried to tell me they didn’t do 01’s in that size till I showed them. So ended up having to buy a pair of PR 5’s.
Tried 4 BMW dealers and several others. Seems the GS’ s in Europe are all shod with Anakee 3 trail type tyres and not road going tyres.

So - 01s good, how do you rate the Road5 against them?

My tour guide used rt01’s on his fjr. Said they felt well planted and secure but longevity was terrible so he went back to pr 4’s

Metzeler 01’s are a cracking tyre IMO, I liked them. Very good in the wet. My rear was done in approx 4.5/5k, had 3mm on when I left and I thought it would last the trip but it was getting a bit close to the wear blocks and had some wet weather ahead of us so decided to try to get a new rear, the front still had 3mm on it. Biggest disappointment was lack of supply in France and having to buy a new pair of tyres.
The PR5 look a slightly taller tyre with a differnt profile so didn’t want to mix them, hence getting a pair. They look a more trail type tyre, with a steeper profile than the 01, and also the PR4. And totally different tread pattern as well, but still very much more road biased when comapred to anakee type tyres.
So far they seem bloody good. Once I’d got the confidence in them they are at least as good in the wet. It’s stopped raining now, thankfully so can’t comment other than one day wet riding. They also seem pretty planted in the dry and high speed stability is great. Due to the profile didn’t think I’d get anywhere near the Michelin man but have touched his hand now but doubt I’ll get to the edge of the tyre with them...with the 01 you used all the tyre. Will see how they wear.....and report back!

Metzler 01 are a good tyre but wear very fast. Good feedback, work in the wet and predictable.

However I prefer the PR5 as they have a sharper turn in (driven by the sharper profile v Metzler) and are just as good in the wet. They do seem to last longer but it’s probably marginal..

Trying one set after the other is the way to go......both excellent tyres on a road biased GS

Which PR5 the road or the trail version are you using......:thumb2

Is anyone else using two rears to one front with the roadtec 01?

I found (S1000XR) that when the rear was toast at around 5,000 miles - the front wasn’t worth leaving on. Unlike the old Tourance tyres on a GS - where you could ‘generally’ make the front last a lot longer - the front Roadtec won’t go to that schedule.

Daft thing is the trail version front PR5 has the same tread as the road version rear/front.

Michelin only label the PR5 as ‘Trail’ when it comes in the 120/19 and 170/17 sizes. You can’t buy a
‘Road’ version or non-‘Trail’ version in those sizes. It is the same tread/technology etc regardless of size and whatever label they call it. Marketing BS.

Confusing at best. Spoke with my tyre dealer this morning and ordered the PR5 (with road tread on rear and front, the rear is road tyre, the front is trail tyre, pay attention at the back)

He said the Michelin is outselling the Metzler on GS's but both very good road tyres. Michelin may last longer but we all ride differently!

He said the Metzler profile is 'round' so consistent in the turn and the Michelin is profiled for a faster turn in.....I assume because of its a variable radius cross section???

Why do they have to make it so bloody confusing............:blast
