Michelin desert how do you rate them ?

Never had them myself - but yesterday in Vines I saw Simon Pavey's rally XC and they were fitted to that, I guess that means he rates em eh;-)

My rear tyre of choice up till now has been the Dunlop D 908 RR but struggled to find one this time round and have just bought a Michelin desert any of you HP2 guys running them and how do you rate them ???:thumb2

Michelin deserts I find are very good I'm running them on mine

But I'm testing an AC10 on my 18" rim (because it was at the right money ) It's not going to last and I'll be back with the Deserts as they last well

See you sunday :thumb

Looking forward to sunday :thumb2 First time out since Andover :eek

How much did you pay for the Deserts I've just paid £100 for one the last 908 only cost around £80 but even at those prices I find them better than any of the FIM tyres I've been getting 3 times the mileage out of the 908 :clap

Another +1 for the desert from me. As the single do everything tyre, they are hard to be beaten. Way more capable than TKC/Karoo T but still quite good on the road and has a good wear rate (for a dirt tyre!)

Have also heard that they're stiff enough to get you home if you get a puncture - although I've yet to test that myself!

Deserts for me too :D wear well as Mav says:rob

They are good and tough offroad. The good side on road, well you will learn to drift, ride slower, use the back brake rather than the front, take a racing line to ease the angles of the corners:cool:
I ride them all the time now don't bother with the Motard wheels, ride slower and get more of a thrill dooing it:eek:

DESERT FOR HP2

hi guys !
I have an 18" desert on HP2 , because the Karoo last only 2000 km .
the desert tyre has been built for african use .
if you use it on wet surface , pay ATTENTION !
very dangerouse .the rubber is quite hard , and it doesn't soften not even if you ride on asfalt at high speed .
saying that I have done an off road track with mud and snow in dec. and the traction was great .
I do not know if it was the bike , or the 18 " wheel .
certainly not me .

in conclusion the Desert is very good for long trips , but for local off road , I will prefer next time to go on a lower cost tyer .
I would never use this tyer on road , too hard , and slippery .

ciao Renato

Thanks for replys Guys

The desert has arrived now and to be honest looks and feels very much the same as the Dunlop D908RR ..the thread pattern is slightly different ...

Hard compound rock solid side walls :D

So for me I would be happy to run either in the future as you guys know sometimes it can be hard to find these 2 tyres in the UK :(

So next question ...:D

What are your running up front...I have been running a TKC for trail riding and a Dunlop Geomax FIM for the UK rallies ...Going to give the MT21 ago talking to louis at the weekend and he rates it as better offroad than the TKC and good enough on road :thumb2

I agree these tryes are very expensive but even compared to the karro's or the conti TKC's they will last two or three times longer so for me it works out a lot cheaper in the long run :thumb2

as for the road work I found the D908RR was very good on the road plenty of grip in the dry ...yes a bit of a feel all of its own in the wet :D

But thats the same with all Knobblies ...

Phil,
I have a Desert on the front of my 640, seems to give the off road grip of an enduro tyre, but without the wear. Dunno what it would be like on the road at speed though, as I don't :augie.
Desert rears are "interesting" in the wet, I can vouch for that.
Mark

Part worn Desert front put me in intensive care in Namibia on tar (uncontrollable weave), but it was realtively high speed (156kph). I now use Desert rear and TKC front if i have to use tar roads.
For sand Desert Front is unbelievable, although I kept getting seriously dug in at the back on steep uphills when in Angolan sand.

Pm Mav was out with him this weekend and he had a new 17" desert fitted :thumb2

I rode Desert's thru Africa for 18 months.

If you want an agressive/hard wearing/ puncture resistant sand/stone offroad tyre then buy a REAR desert.

The front tyre is a different beast.
It hates road, it loves sand/mud.

Damm good tyres but hard to get hold of. (17 inch)
