Michelin Pilot 4 long life on LC 2014

After trying the PR4's (trail front, GT rear)
I am now going to try a pair of these:

http://www.dunlop.eu/dunlop_euen/mc/tyres/on_road/RoadSmart_III.jsp

The PR4´s have been great, but the rate at which the rear squares off is almost as unbelievable as the wet weather grip it gives!
For some reason, the GT has squared off even quicker than the trail it replaced.
The front (trail) has worn amazingly well, with even wear & no hint of feathering, etc.

Exactly, the front is fine but the rear has squared off. It's 1mm to the wear marker in the middle and 2mm on the sides.

Curious to hear some feedback on those dunlops!

Got a trail front and gt rear from opineo £186 delivered, going to see if the harder gt last longer than trail at six thou

Having spoken to the guys at Dunlop this new tyre sounds like it could be a good step if you're road only riding,, I've got PR4 and like many front hardly worn rear squaring off on my GS and on my R1200R the rear is not squaring but wearing .. Having had sportsmart on my S1000RR id buy with confidence

I called the distributor today and they are not bringing in the 120/70ZR19 front tyre into Australia. You would have to order one from Europe.

Troppo has the PR4's on his GS.

I only got about 3800 miles from my first PR4 Trail rear, including 2700 miles on tour to the Alps, and I had to be very gentle for the last 500 miles to make it home without having to get it changed in Germany.

The rear was changed to a PR4 GT and not only is the compound harder in the centre, the tread is also deeper. The carcass also seems stiffer, but I only ride two-up, so it's not an issue for me. I think it'll probably last about 1000 miles longer than the Trail

Old thread but I hate starting new ones when there is an existing one..

I'm down to 1mm from the wear marker on the rear PR4 trail after just 9200klms. I thought I would get longer out of these but from reading this thread it seems about right.

I will go at least one more rear of these but would change if there was something as good as a road tyre plus quiet.

Yup, high tread wear was definitely one of the disadvantages I noticed from these.
But on the bright(er) side, they don't even seem to notice when it's raining. These are the only tyres I've used - on any bike - that make a streaming wet road feel like a dry one.
Oh, and compared to Tourance Nexts, the riding experience is absolutely sublime. :bounce1

I think I said it before - with TNs, the R-GS feels like it's wearing clodhopping hiking boots. It CAN sprint in them, but it feels like it would prefer not to.
With PR4s, the bike feels like it's swapped the hiking boots for lightweight cross-trainers.

Hi Nick

I bought my bike pre-owned with Conti Trail attack 2 tyres fitted, which was OEM in SA for the 2103 models, as far as I can tell. At 21000 km the front is going to need replacement within the near future, at the rear the second TA 2 is still fine for more km. Judging from the responses here it is not highly regarded, do you have experience with these? If so is the PR4s a better call for mostly tar road riding?

Regards
Marius

I found my bike dropped into corners better with the Conti TA2, but their wet weather grip was fairly poor. The PR4's need a touch of countersteering, but grip better in all conditions.

Hi again! :)

I admit, I've had no direct experience of the TA2.
A work colleague of mine bought his '13 LC second-hand with TA2s fitted. I know he sometimes does track days out at Zwartkops, so they couldn't be too bad - but I'll quiz him when he has time.
The rear tyre on his bike seemed to go fairly quickly. He's currently running a TA2 on the front and an Anakee 3 at the rear.

My LC suffered alternator stator failure a while ago - it's been in for repairs, so I haven't had a chance to ride it for a while. But I'm currently running Anakee 3s front and rear.
I will say that the PR4s set a very high benchmark. The Anakee 3s are good tyres - but they feel mediocre by comparison to the PR4s.

Interestingly, the last time I priced tyres at Just Bike Tyre (off the Old Johannesburg Road), the TA2s were something like 30% more expensive, and TNs about 10% more expensive, than the equivalent PR4s.

On an (almost) unrelated topic, the Anakee 2s I currently have fitted to my '10 F800GS are crap in the wet.
We've been having rainstorms of note up here on the Highveld. Yesterday, I very nearly came off after the rear end let go and kicked sideways, while I was crossing a broken white line (under moderate throttle in sixth gear).
