Micro DE to HiD Convertion Kit

Les - I've already got an H3 HID kit sitting in the garage. Would you sell just the DIY backplates for the Micro DE's?

If so, how many Blairos?

Thanks,
Rich

You have every thing but the backplates ??

I've just come onto the thread - been busy for a few days :(

I have a 1200 GS with Colebatch's excellent 50W HID setup in Main and dip :D (though sadly not the ultra-thin ballasts :( ) and a pair of Micro DE's converted to HID (35W) mounted on SW Motech Tank Bars (standard GS not Adv). In my opinion, this is the absolute dogs goolies and can't be beaten with any setup (plus it uses approximately 3.5 to 3.75 Amps less current - battery and alternator not working as hard :thumb ).

I've not seen Les' 'disks' but will (hopefully) soon when I replace my home made ones :thumb2 . If they're as good as his 'under beak' mount, they'll be a spot on job :D

I think that, if anything, the Micro DE mod is even better than the Dip HID Conversion - I never turn mine off and it's like parting of the waves in traffic :aidan nd I don't get 'flashed' either.

So my advice - Convert the Micro DE's to HID (either yourself if you've got several hours to spare, a grinder and a dremel) or with Les' disks/service but, whatever you do, do it! :D :D :D

Have to say I've been wondering.......I'm more than happy with a HID dip and normal DE's plus PIAA main and FF50s.........but........if you reckon it's THAT good.........nooooooo...............don't tempt me..................

Believe me it is :D on 2 counts

Firstly - with the 50W HID Dip, the standard Micro DE's did not add much

Secondly - with the HID'ed (is that a word?) Micro DE's the 'triangle pattern' must look like a 747 coming in to land and the traffic jumps out of the way (without 'blinding' other road users before we got onto that thread again :thumb )

So:

Go on, you know you want to :D :thumb2 :D

another vote for 3 HIDs on dipped beam ... 50 watt HID low beam and the two BMW fogs in my case with 35 watt HIDs.

but then again, I am biased :thumb

can you convert a set of piaa 510`s, not sure of the bulb type. btbr will know;)

As Les said its a h3 bulb ... the 510 lights are pretty big, but they are not that deep ... the depth is the key really...:
(1) to have enough depth in front of the reflector, so the longer HID burner will fit in without touching the front glass, and
(2) to have enough space at the back of the burner to allow for the back end of the HID burner and the associated wiring.

Would be a case of trial n error

Just looked at my PIAA 510's, I think that you will struggle to fit the burner in without it touching the glass. Eevn if it does fit, then it will be very close to the glass indeed.

Glad you had a good trip, will pm you :thumb2

Someone from our UK office is coming out onTuesday (arrive Wednesday am) so I should have my 'disks' in my hands on Wednesday :D

I'll let you all know what they're like (I bet there as good as Les' Under-Beak' ballast mount :thumb2

I've just got my 'mits' on the disks and they are, indeed, another quality job from Les.

They may seem a tad expensive for what they look and, as I know, you can make them yourself but, as I also know, they take some time and hassle to make by hand (and, even if you use a nominal value on your time - Les' work out cheaper:thumb2 ). So, having taken both routes, my preference is the ready-made, no hassle route of using Les' disks.

Using these, and Les' under beak ballast mounting, I would say that the total conversion time is less than an hour - and it is a fantastic mod :D

Can't wait to get my 'quality' disks installed.

And here are some pics of my HiD upgraded DE’s courtesy of Les. Together with a HiD Low beam.

I would recommend this upgrade to anyone who wants some serious light. Great kit and easy to fit. Even for a tech numpty like me:thumb2:

Hi Les,
Maybe I missed it, but how much for the discs alone? I already have the Micro DEs and a bunch of HID kits.

Cheers,
Jon.

Have not really offered the disks out as some HiD need to be just a little custom fitted to the disks all depends if you have time and a little patience.

Fair enough. Do you do the Micro DEs in both fog and spot/driving pattern?

And is it the black ones or the "premium" ones with the silver trim?

Cheers,
Jon

Only done the fog's at the moment, would have to find out if the supplier does the spot ones.

And have now done the FF50 HiD

Might be tough Les ... as far as I know, all the halogen Micro DEs and Premium Micro DEs are in the fog beam pattern. The Spot pattern is only available in the Hella Xenon Micro DEs and Premium Xenon DEs

Maybe your guy can get you just the reflectors for the Xenon driving lights without having to buy the whole HID kits, (which unfortunately come with the huge old fat bulky style, not really waterproof Hella ballasts), and you fit the driving beam reflectors into the halogen fogs.

I guess the best solution might be to buy the Xenon ones, minus the 35 watt HID burner and minus the old fat ballasts. But when I tried to do that, I struck out. Had to buy the whole thing and then sell the ballasts off. :nenau ...

Not the cheapest way to do it ... but I wanted the 50 watt HIDs (and thin ballasts) in the spots.

Have to say from a logical perspective, I think the solution is to skip the MicroDE spots idea all together, and just go for the FF50s HIDified with either 35 or 50 watt HIDs. It will be half the price and 20 times simpler.
