Microphone troubles

I seem to have "broken" my laptop's built in microphone. Skype did work OK, but after trying a combined mike/headset, the laptop integral mike is now not being seen by Skype. Worse, the mike seems to be live as it is causing feedback screech through the built in speakers. I now cannot get any mike to be recognised by Skype. Any clues?

double click your speaker on the bottom right hand side and go to adjust audio properties and turn your mike down

OK Thanks. I can turn down the overall speaker volume to avoid the screeching feedback. My big problem is that Skype cannot see a microphone at all. When I do the Skpye test call routine, I can hear the ringing tone via the inbuilt speakers OK, but I'm stuck as Skype is just not recognising the inbuilt microphone at all.

Plugging in a headset gets me nowhere either. Earphones work OK and even though I can hear the boom mike in my ears, Skype will still not recognise that any microphone is connected. I cannot find anywhere via Control Panel to get a mike recognised.

try this.....

Skype:
Skype-->Tools -> Options -->Sound Devices-->audio device/USB/etc Audio Device (do NOT use windows default device)
You can also tick the ring pc speaker check box as this is a good backup to alert you even
if the main speakers are off or turned down.

Windows:
Start-->Control panel-->Sound and Audio devices
On the audio tab set the default playback device to your main soundcard(AC97/Audio-chip/add-on-adapter), etc.
Your installed audio device must be present there.
If not, reinstall audio device

If you're using Windows Vista or 7 you may be hiding some of the sound devices.

Go to control panel, sound on the recording tab right click in a space and make sure show disabled devices and show disconnected devices is shown.

If your missing mic appears you should be able to enable it.
