A bit embarassing really. I sold my 2000 1150 gs to a great guy this morning.

It's trailered back to Oxford in a bit of rain so it's gently washed off.

(I'm relaying the symptoms here)
Goes out for a ride, opens throttle and no power, and I think just hesitates. Rolls throttle off and behaves, He says it did backfire loudly. the bike could only reach about 70mph max :(

The bike has done about 37k miles and never missed a beat. I suggested water may have got into the TPS connection although doubt it as it's been fine before.
It's been serviced and I've ridden it since, a couple of months ago, it was faultless.
The fuel filter was changed a year ago but I'm wondering if this could still be the cause.
I will get him to check the fuel tank breather pipe hasn't been squashed.
It needs to be sorted straight away as he's going abroad in a while.

Sensible advise much appreciated :thumb

What`s the betting it`s the famous right hand throttle cable dislodged problem ??

Very unlikely, it's the sort of thing I check for when refitting tank etc.

Well it started straight away and ran smoothly when revved and at tickover, it definatly sounds like a problem under load :nenau

I'm out for the evening but please keep the thinking caps on :bow

could it have dislodged in transit?

Possibly but again unlikely.
Are the symptoms I'm describing often caused by that, I suppose it's I could have dislodged it cleaning etc?

Any must get out

I have had a problem with a lack of power at mid and high revs and could only achieve 80mph on my 850 GS, I have reported this issue on this site on a couple of occasions but the solutions have not resolved the fault so far.
So today I bit the bullet and took my bike to CW motorcycles, so far they have replaced the fuel filter on my request, the throttle body sensor and when I went back to the bike at 2.00pm the hall sensor was the next offending article to get scrutinized.
A few weeks back I did a motronic fuel system reset which gained me full revs in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear.
Hope this may be of some help.

Thanks Rideaday, sounds similar. Could you keep me posted if you find the cause.
cheers tim

Can't see that rain would have done anything Timmy......it would have happened before now :nenau

Trailered...then the thing won't pull......

I bet something's been dislodged/damaged in transit 'cos the tie down straps yanked on it......TPS, throttle cable.......the little plug that pokes in the bottom of the TPS......something like that :nenau

Halls sensor looking favorite.....not cheap either, £150 for the part alone

The latest on my 850 GS is the Hall sensor appears not to be at fault, but the main motronic (ECU?) computer has failed, it is specific to the 850, and there are none in the country so it has been ordered from Germany at a cost of £710 :( . So far CW have been good and I have enjoyed using there 650 GS loan bike.
With my ABS main pump failed (replaced by Steptoe) and the motronic system has gone the same way what else is there to go tits up.... all on a 13000 mile bike. :nenau

Sorry to hear that m8, at least you know what's wrong now. Perhaps you could have tried James Sherlock for a second hand motronic but I guess 850's are less common.

Spark plug caps breaking down? Mine was parked in the rain once, fine before, then when I came out there was a lack of power, backfiring on the overrun, won't idle properly (feels like it is about to stall but doesn't) and the rev counter shows twice the revs it should do and waves around a bit. All because one of the spark plug caps was breaking down.

If the chap has access to another GS of similar vintage then it would be easy to find out - swap the caps and the problem dissapears.

Thanks for all the advise, I believe he will take the bike to Steptoe who can swop bits back and forth untill a cure is found. Then Steppers :bow that fine looking young man with a talent for almost everything including his manliness in persuing hardened criminals will send me the as always, very reasonable bill.
