Midges & Mosquitos - problem? What works?

Don't worry about it!

I've spent nearly six weeks over two holidays [end July - beginning Aug] in Norway getting as far north as the Lofoten Islands. Neither of us got bitten once.

In fact, I didn't see one midge and only one mosquito - which I squidged - so there's prolly none left now anyways.

Hope it is like that when we go!:thumb

Voice of impoverished experience....

IMPORTANT WARNING!

Anything with DEET in it will cause instant terminal damage to the £££ anti-reflective coatings on prescription spectacles or expensive type sunglasses (oakleys etc) if it gets any where near their optical surfaces.

Easily done. Even if you only put the stuff on your hat or veil, sweat will soon enough smear it onto the old 4eyes equipment. The damage can't be undone.

Find yourself a lady companion who smokes quite a bit is the best plan:-

If your specs are already b******d you can be less fussy:-

Midges

Don't rely on mosqueto nets, the little bastards are too small and get through
the holes!. We found a book on midges in a caf'e in gleb coe, apparently they are attracted by you breath(c02) so, answer hold your breath.

Having been eaten alive in Scotland a couple of years ago I can vouch for avons "Skin so soft" It really works, and my skin is now supple and soft too:rolleyes:

DEET works! Stronger the better, but don't use on small kids. Turns plastics to goo, especially bikini buckles :-{). Pump sprays rather than aerosols are more controllable.
Works by evaporation, so top up 4-6 hourly.
Wear long sleeves & trousers after 4pm
DEET-soaked nets & wristbands are good
Thiamine tablets (Benerva) are useful at 100 - 300mg daily, but make you smell worse than fresh DEET.
Citronella oil is now so far down the list that you're not allowed to claim repellent action on the bottle.
Autan works better in trials than real life (as if life's not a trial)
And yes, the buggers do go for tourists more than locals. A bit of research here might be the next step forward, if any drug company policymakers are reading.

Well after being bitten to buggery on a trip to Scotland at the beginning of June Avon skin so soft did feck all for me :(

I've bought some stuff fromt he Aerostich website called Cutter. They reckon that's it's the 'nuts. I'll let you know whether it works. Have got some Jungle Formula neet Deet as back-up.

Nice

Just got back from the north of Sweden/Norway where using Avon Skin So Soft made feck all difference. perhaps I was the only warm blooded mammal for 100km...
Used the spray on oil stuff. What are the rest of you guys doing with it...gargling it? Spraying it on exposed areas didn't seem to deter the midges or mosquitoes.

I did a 5 and a half week tour of Norway, Sweden, Finland a few years back. And I spent 4 days up at the Nordkapp at the bike party up there. Didnt see a single biting insect........Saw lots of home made booze, now that was dangerous and would have kept them off. Maybe its more of an issue in the south??????

However...........I would recommend buying whatever the locals use when you get there. My family come from Finland where there are loads of mozzies, they have far better gear over there than we have.

1. Go to shop in Norway, get something from FINNS to put on your skin. Or get Mosquito Milk, it look like a deodorant for your arm pit. (No need to find a mosquito and get milk out of it! :P )
2. The blood suckers try to smell where to find blood, so perfume&soap is a better idea then your nature smell after 3 days in your gear and no shower.;)
3. Alcohol does not help.
4. If no wind, make smoke from FINNS MYGGSPIRAL; lighten the end of the green thingie and let the smoke camouflage the smell of you.
5. Keep your gear on and ride faster then the insects, but I guess that is no option with the bikes you lot are riding.:nenau ;)
