Might seem a daft question, but ....

I have an Odyssey battery on my 1150 GS
If it's been on the optimate for a few days, what voltage would you expect to show from the battery immediately after disconnecting it ?

What does the battery voltage drop down to when you hit the starter button ?

Good question ! :D
Starter sounds a little "sluggish" and occasional ABS light glitches, so I'm leaning towards battery (8 years old) or starter needs a Refurb ....

If you've gotten 8 yrs out of a battery you've done well.
It's time for a new one regardless.
90% chance that'll solve your problem.

No :)
But shows about 12.3 before you try and start it .....

Close enough! So why ask a question you know an answer to? I was just wondering if you had an AGM that had dropped below 6v.

Frankly, you have an odd way of posting. I can't decide if it's just plain cryptic or it's a wind up. Either way, have fun.

Not sure why you should think it's a wind up.
I have an 8 year old Oddysey battery which after being on the Optimate for a few days, will start the bike, BUT, I've been having issues with alternating ABS lights, which then need resetting. It's fine for a couple of starts or so, then I have the issues with the ABS lights again. I was just wondering about the voltage I should be expecting before starting, to give me some indication as to the need to look at a new battery or not. I'm sorry you found it cryptic and odd, I was merely searching for some help from people I thought may be better informed and have more experience in these things than myself.
Obviously I was in the wrong place
My apologies

Thanks for that, I was thinking along the same lines.... 1 ordered.
Thanks again

Definitely sounds like a new battery should solve the problem :thumb2

And just because you get an unfriendly response from one person doesn't mean you're in the wrong place :D

I don't think it was an unfriendly response at all! I was all set to give a long answer on my experiences bringing an odyssey and an agm battery back to life. Had to do each slightly differently. Instead I was posed a question, hazarded a guess with the VERY limited information and then I'm told I'm wrong by the OP. at worst I was dismissive Spud. If you had included all the RELEVENT info at the start we could have avoided this banter. Then again, it's good to talk ;)

I was merely trying to ascertain a base line figure that I should be expecting before trying to start it. Obviously, it may have been the wrong question to ask.
I'm no keyboard warrior and certainly not going to "fall out" with someone I've never met over something like this.
I've ordered a new battery that I'll stick on next week and see what happens.
Best wishes to everyone, have a great Christmas !! :)

It wasn't the wrong question but it was a bit of magical mystery tour:beerjug:

Spud, try removing and cleaning the starter too. They tend to get bunged up with greasy crud. I have to do this every year or so when starting seems a bit sluggish. The bike always starts easier afterwards. Even with a new battery a sticky starter will draw more current and then you get the ABS light problem. It's a 30 minute job to remove the starter, clean it and bung it back on.

If, it is fully charged between 13.8 and 14.4v the only true way to assert actual voltage is a drop test under full load.

I've just replaced the odyssey on my 12gsa with a jmt lithium battery, cost is roughly similar but weighs next to damn all compared to lead acid or agm.

I'm only getting as far as 12.6 volts before I start cranking. I'll try cranking when I get home, but after 8 years I'm feeling the battery may be a little "tired"
I'll pull the starter and check that anyway (when my garage is a little warmer !!)

Thanks for all the replies

12.2 up to 12.6 is a fully charged battery, as said 10 - 10.5 min when cranking is a better guide to condition.
