Millau Bridge, Gorge du Tarn & Carcassonne 2009

One of my favourite hotels, mainly for the location, is the Auberge de la Cascade in the Tarn Gorge.

Bob, spent a few nights of my honeymoon there. Heaven on earth. Don't go telling everyone about it.

Tim, I've ridden around there a few times and the roads are great. I can't recall any particular ones, I'm afraid, but every road going out of Bedarieux seems to be great. But, make the most of being on a GS rather than a sportsbike and get onto the more minor roads - ones that'd have sportsbikes bouncing all over the place are such good fun. You'll have to cut down on the daily mileages, but it'll be worth it. Increase your lean angles, but only in second and third gears...

(I did notice more speed traps on N roads this year, but none on the D roads.)

The only other roads that stick out in my mind from a few years ago are the roads to the north of Mende - some lovely fast sweepers.

The Cirque de Navacelles, to the east of Lodeve, is worth a ride. And the approach to it has some fearsomely fast straights.

Wherever you go, and however many make it there with you, have fun. :thumb

Next time you come down Robin you should get into the Aubrac, some roads in there put the Route Nap to shame!

FWIW

Have you looked at the possibility of head'n over and doing the Grand Canyon du Verdun AWESOME scenery and road's and plenty of accomodation in Castellane as has already been mentioned.

Have to be a bit careful with the accomodation, I was there early September and every hotel was full! It is best to do the Gorge du Verdon and the Route Napoleon at the same time. As you say, awesome!

I am just looking at this again.

I am just wondering if crossing to St Malo, then the Millau Bridge, then the G de Verdon and Route Napoleon, then back to St Jean Pied du Port (the pilgrim town) isn't perhaps an odd route?

It seems to go NW to roughly SSE, then ENE, then S, then roughly WSW, into Spain and home. "Random" - as my fifteen year old daughter would (annoyingly) call it.

Would it not be better to go:

Calais, Route Napoleon, G du Verdon, Millau, St J de Porte and then across the Pyrenees and home. Broadly speaking this is a reverse L shape. South, then west.

===

St Jean Pied du Port is a nice place, for sure. I stayed there for two days, three years ago, then rode along the top of the Pyrenees, west to east. The Logis de France hotel in the town is fine.

===

I think you are possibly being over optimistic with the daily mileage. I am sure you can manage but some of your potential tourists might like a day off the bike perhaps? My suggested reverse L route means you could build one in.

Richard, let me clarify the plan.
1. I never said that I was doing the Route Napoleon or Gorge du Verdun, I have no plans to do either on this trip.
2. I live in Portsmouth so I have no plans to go via Calais.

Go back to my update with the planned route and you will see that St Malo to Limoges then Millau is heading SE, then after a day in the gorge, heading SW and West to the Pyrenees. Very logical and not random.

Thanks for the info on the Logis in St Jean. I've been there before too and very pretty place.
Cheers

Is cool... :beerjug:

I had just looked at the suggestions pouring in and had mistranslated some of them.

Bon chance!

Thanks Richard, I think that I'm ok on the milage for the days as I've spend some time checking different route planners and maps, but I think that the time is conservative so I will add some contingency into these.
Cheers

Not Asleep

Stay here, a lovely place 2 mins from St. Enimie.http://aubergecascade.com/index-gb.htm.

Stayed there in 2006 fell in love with the place :thumb2...Best to ride the Gorge on a week day as it gets very busy on the weekends and public holidays ...Watch out for tourist coaches they take up the whole road :eek:Great place for a lunch stop if you don't stay overnight ...

Absolutely crawling with them, the road climbing out of the village past the hotel garage leads to a couple. Unfortunately, as usual it seems, a few riders appear to want to get everyone banned by using loud pipes and riding like tw*ts through hamlets etc. We don't do ourselves any favours do we :nenau

Thanks Brian, ok rough pricing assuming we take the Friday night ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo on the 5th and return on the Bilbao ferry the following Friday arriving Portsmough on Sat 17:15. The outbound ferry price for 1 person and 1 motocycle is £147 and the return is £180, both assume one person in a 2 berth cabin, so some economies if people share. Plan for Eur50-60 per night for accomodation x6 nights.
If we can get enough interest, we can book the ferries ourselves and I'll book hotels with deposits from the confirmed.
Now need to know who is interested or not.

Trip

Hi Tim, well thanks for the last post. I am struggling to get commitment for a driver for the dates you have said as it is not school holidays. Getting someone to commit that far in advance is a nightmare. I am still working on it but cant give you any decision has of yet. PM me when you have got to have final numbers and i will get back to you then
Thanks
