I've done a few searches and can't get the answer so here goes:
it looks as though 20/50 seems to be the way forward for the 1200. My bike will soon hit 12000 miles and I'm wondering whether to keep running it on mineral oil (currently I use 10/40 mineral) or switch now to semi synthetic? I think I'll go 20/50 anyway...

I think the general feeling is when it stops using oil, then it is run in, which doesn't have to be mileage specific. After that, use whatever you like, i'm using 20w50 full synth at 11,000 miles.

ok well mine is definitely still guilty of oil usage!

My 1200 has been on Putoline DX4 10W40 semi-synthetic since day one, the oil consumption was never more than 250ml/1000miles. I had the 18,000 mile service last week done by a different dealer, they put in Castrol GP 10W40 which I believe is a mineral oil - they absolutely insisted that it is a waste of money to use anything more exotic.

My bike is used mainly for long distance touring. I found when BMW moved from 10W40 mineral oil to 10W40 semi synthetic that the oil consumption improved considerably. BMW then moved to 20w50 mineral oil and she is back to her old guzzling ways and I've got to carry more oil!

There is another interesting oil thread on at the moment, but specifically can anyone give any info on recommended 20W50 semi-synthetic oils please??

Ta.

I`m using 20/50 mineral and wouldn`t touch anything else. I get no oil usage whatsoever although it`s only done 6000 miles.

I used full mineral on my old 1150GS-A and it never used a drop in 30,000 miles.:D

I think it`s luck of the draw on oil usage although 4 of us went to Valencia last year and 4 GS`s usd no oil at all!! As for mineral or synthetic, I think it`s down to personal preference and maybe price.

Not a lot of help I`m afraid.
