Valve Clearance check at 12000 miles..

But surely if they then need adjustment you have to order the correct shims required to bring them back in to spec. So do you then leave the bike in bits waiting ?

Or put it back together and take valve covers off again once the shims arrive

Terry

I/we will cross that bridge if we come to it but this is where my mechanic friend will step in.:beerjug:

has anybody done it or know of dealers who have found them to be out of tolerance and actually adjusted the valves ..all the research ive done just brings up all within tolerance

That's what I've found and mine has now covered 22,000 miles and bet they are still within tolerance. And was wondering the same as you.

Terry

seems to me they are whipping the valve covers off and charging £200 for the 30min labour time

Mine has done nearly twice the recommended mileage at 22,000 miles and is still in spec, why suggest they need checking at 12,000 if none have had to be adjusted yet, oh apart from making money out of us.

Terry

Ktm needed a valve check at the 600 mile check. I don't know if any were found to be out. £350 bill. It would have been a great get out clause for engine damage claims if it was neglected. JJH

Checked mine today at 35000 miles still in tolerance, If they need doing you need three special tools to lock the crank and cam plus a gadget that pre tensions the cam chain....best done at the dealers i think, serviced mine today, new plugs, motul oil, air, oil filters plus diff oil change.£80 all in..Thanks to the wonder of Ebay :augie

This is why I'm doing it myself..... £80 bargain.:clap

yes i have one and the slim plug socket needed, the biggest pain is having to remove the genuine crash bars to get to everything, but its only once every 12k miles ;)

As above for the tools :rob and as above about the crash bars :rob but when I think of the cash I am saving, it's only my own time that I am spending. :D

I can't believe that you have to remove genuine crash bars to do them.

When my bike was serviced at 3000 miles they typed on the invoice that due to non standard crash bars I would incur extra labour charges when the 12000 mile service was due.

On principle I will remove and refit them myself when the time comes.

As you can see... the bars go right in front of the cover for the spark plugs :(

I thought they were having a go because I bought aftermarket crash bars.

If you have to pay to remove genuine bars I'm no worse off.

I had to change three shims on my GSLC at 12k miles because they were too loose. Had to change three shims on my KTM 390 Duke at 600 miles because they were too tight. It is possible to check the valve clearances on a LC with only the coil puller.

I know BMW = Break My Wallet and at £455  for the 12,000 mile service I wonder if i can just save a fortune and do it myself...

Oil change and filter, final drive oil, air filter and plugs plus check all the rest (breaks etc). Maybe I should have a read up on the valve checks and see how easy/difficult it is. :nenau

The only issue then is 'service history' for my 2014 GSA..
Hi mate. The answer is yes do the tappets and not to take it to BMW but instead use a garage that specialises in them AND had the computer to be able to check all the systems correctly. When i say conputer i dont mean the silly G911 thing i mean a full diagnostic computer of which the best is made by Texa.
I just happen to have one of these AND the latest G911 for when im out and about just in case someone needs diagnostic work while away..
We can stamp your service book no problem. I can say we are usually at least £160 cheaper than BMW and use geniune parts if requested.

If you decide to do it yourself then thats great but do get it put on the diagnostic computer to check all the electronics are working correctly. We charge £50 cash all in for this service.
Just so you know how important the computer side is, when you have it done at the dealer, their price include software updates and all the electronic adjustment , we can check which software pack you have and if updates are needed and can do the adjustments.
There are loads of other things we can do whilst plugged in like service interval adjustment, fuel gauge adjustment, idle adjustments, remapping, fueling adjustments to compensate for sports exhausts, miles to km change, abs testing, etc etc the list goes on buy does vary depending on model and spec. Obviously you have to connect to pc to do other things like brake fluid change, abs resetting, tyre pressure monitor set up etc etc...
Also when fitting extras like alarms or new parts like speedo heads we can activate and fit these as well.

Thanks Mike..... I may well take you up on the computer check up after I have done the service. If it's ok with you, I'll PM you when I'm ready and make arrangements.. btw, where are you based?

Sounds like I may be having a ride over to Herts for next service
