Ok so I've been chatting to a mate about mirror polishing some aluminium panniers.
He records it's not legal to have a mirror finish on a UK vehicle.

Wile I understand the reasoning for such a rule I'm not sure it actually exists as a law. I see lots of HGV tankers with a mirror finish and there are lots of companies out there that will wrap your whole car.

So anyone 'know' the rules on this for a fact. Don't dive in with opinions I'm looking for actual legislation.

I have heard that it isn't legal for the bodywork to be mirror but not bits attached to it. No idea if it is true or not but either way I don't see an issue with your panniers. Years ago all my bikes had loads of chrome or highly polished bits all over them. It was also common for cars to have chrome bumpers and grills along with loads of other bits.

That's diving in with a half-considered opinion. The OP wants hard, cast in stone, wrought in iron, slam dunk, no debate, spot-on, irrefutable, legal certainty.

PS Legal or not, if the OP wants bods to think he is some blinged-up sand ****** with no taste, he'll be laughing.

As opposed to your comments which have no relationship with the ops post what so ever and only serve to have a go!

In the Construction and Use reg's 1986 it mentions not causing a nuisance or danger but nothing specific to the op's question and so a matter of interpretation perhaps?

I'm reminded of an argument, some years ago, over the fitting of blue flashing lights on the rear of a Fire Engine. Nottinghamshire Police said it was illegal but Derbyshire Police were OK with it.

No there is no specific regulation regarding this, you will be fine.
As others have said, tankers have highly polished tanks, I have had mirror polished Aluminum cars in at the car pound and they were just there for the no insurance or licence not the fact they were shattering crass!!!!
Feel free to polish your panniers to what ever level of mirror finish secure in the knowledge that you commit no crime with the exception of those against good taste, oh and you will look like a bell end!! but so long as its deliberate and not by accident then that's ok ;-)

Thanks Bowser and others.
Thought I'd get some abuse but to be honest I've never been called a tasteless sand nigger before, well done.

Having been followed by a mate when the sun was going down behind us,I would never consider polishing ally panniers, when we stopped he commented that the reflected glare from my unpolished panniers into his face was quite bad.
I consider this to be as bad and annoying as lazy Bastards in cars sitting at Traffic lights etc with their foot on the brake causing the high level brake light to glare into the face of the driver behind, for fecks sake is it so difficult to pull on the hand brake !!

Erm, sunglasses?

And as for brake lights if that's annoying you I'd get some help with that cos really life is too short.

Oh and the difference between a sand ***** and an ordinary ***** is one ***** lives in Saudi Arabia and one lives in da Bronx.
