been riding around the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina for almost a week now. We've ridden the snake, the cherohala highway, the blue ridge parkway, the tail of the dragon, over 1000 miles so far, the roads are Out Of This World, truly. But I keep thinking of the gs at home in the garage. Mind you we are riding two up, full luggage on a v strom 650. It's a good little bike tho and handled well although it's a bit wooden in the bends. The lc would have been Boss here. Sat in Nashville right now, back home Wednesday, and I'm thinking when can I get back on these American back roads again.

i hear you we toured Japan on a CB750 what a POS and a GSA + K1200GT sitting at home.
You just have to use the tools you have available.

When I toured the states it worked out too expensive to fly my own GS out so I just bought one over there instead and then sold it at the end of the trip. I advertised it ahead of the end of my trip stating where and when it would be for sale. could've sold it 5 times over. A Seattle cop bought it. It was great doing it on a GS instead of something like a KLR650 which many said to use.:thumb2

Glad you're enjoying yourselves Roger, even if it IS on a Wee Strom LOL.

Seriously though you are riding, in my opinion, maybe the best "motorcycle road" area in the U.S. The region consisting of western NC, eastern TN, north GA, western VA, eastern Kentucky, and some of WV. While you list the more well known roads (Dragon, Snake, etc) other near by roads are basically the same and not as congested or patrolled.
The area also sports a number of private "motorcycle only campgrounds". It's nice in the evenings to sit around a fire chatting with other bikers. A ride I enjoy doing, and would recommend, is to stop at various ones for a couple nights, which allows a day ride of the area, then pack up and move to another one. For instance;

Thanks for that Clifton, I'll check those out.

You're welcome :-) Are you planning to post a ride report with pictures?

Actually this week's forecast looks nice I may just head down to Willville myself for a couple days. Then back home to get ready for the BMWRA rally in Arkansas end of the month.

I should not have read this. :D I was booked onto Sgt Bilcos East to West USA tour this summer, but fell when a ladder broke ,and smashed my heel bone into bits. One week before departure, and was due to ride them there roads. On my Gs. :blast

Glad you had a good time though. :thumb2

Rogerstansfield + other riders who rent overseas!.... If you are saddened by non-bmw rental in the USA and other countries, I have a recommendation.

Travel to Cape-town, the Rand is in Freefall, GS (2015 models) rental is easy/affordable and you have roads / dirt to suit all tastes. The worlds best food/wine also helps real the package.

Would absolutely agree....hired a brand new LC for £35 a day for a couple of weeks in Jo Berg for a little jaunt around Botswana....they even put TKC 70 on FOC to replace the Anakee3s...the TKCs were great on the gravel as well....great people, no problems at all...awesome trip.

Oldandfat,
May I ask who you hired the bike from? Thinking of going over this winter.
Thanks
