Mine has the usual rash on the bottom of the timing cover because the previous owner had not fitted a fender extender or crud catcher.

I would like to get the cover powder coated. Does anyone know if the old paint has to be chemical stripped?

Also can it be removed without taking off the crash bars?. No scratch that, I'll get them done in black at the same time.

Whoever you get to powder coat the cover will blast clean the paint off as part of the preparation, however if you want a really good finish you should rub down the cover where its corroded, to remove the pit marks, as powder coating will make them stand out as its is not very good at filling.:beerjug:

I asked because some coatings dont blast off easily so the finish can become patchy. I might just nitromors it anyway. Then the coating will need minimal grit blasting.

Agree about old damage showing through a new finish. I've had a few engine parts done from other bikes. The alloy can become quite scarred under the old paint.

My plan is to have this powdered in black then prime and paint in silver. Low temperature stove looks a lot better than powder but not as tough. With black underneath the paint I will be able to see any chips before they become a problem.

why bother , just have it shotblasted and powdercoated silver and powder laquered over the top, no fuss no more worries.

The enamellers showed me their silver powder coat. It looked very plastic. The low temperature stove looks really great but is far less tough.
