I'm tired of my noisy Remus (road legal one) and want something nice and quiet. The standard one is ok, but just toooooooo heavy.

...How loud are they?

Staintune pipes decibel range will vary depending on the bike, and whether or not you use the sound restrictors. On average, as a general rule, the pipes run in the low 90's with the restrictors in place and just over 100 with the restrictors removed.

This is a general rule of thumb and can vary depending on the individual model. A Ducati twin will definitely be more heart and ear pounding than an inline four BMW. The design of the engine can vary the number a few decibels +/-. With the restrictor in place you will get an exhaust note that is just slightly louder than the stock muffler. It will be throatier under acceleration and deceleration and only the slightest bit louder under steady throttle.

Think of it as a shotgun choke which reduces the diameter of the exhaust exit. It has only a very small effect on performance when installed, and its main function is to reduce the exhaust note to a very pleasing level.

STAINTUNE pipes are actually one of the quietest aftermarket exhausts you can buy. Even with the sound restrictors removed, they still come in a few decibels less than almost all other aftermarkets pipes.

With the restrictor removed you are now in full "Sport-Pipe" mode and the bike will be louder under all conditions (idle, acceleration and deceleration). A better way to put this whole picture in perspective is to determine how well you like your neighbors. With the restrictors in place you can attend the summer parties down the street. With the restrictors removed you can pretty much count on not getting an invitation in the mail.

Is it lighter than the standard monster?

Weighs somewhere around the 3kg mark. I'll compare them when I take the old one off this weekend.

It cost $725 useless Aussie dollars delivered but I had a $400 bonus from work for putting up with them for 20 years, so not bad for $325.

I have always hated really loud pipes too. Gets too much on a trip with the constant noise but I do like a bike to sound like something mechanical. I'll be trying it with the restrictor in and out to see how much difference it makes in the real world. I decided on Staintune as they are an Aussie manufacture with a good reputation worldwide and they also make a set of larger headers for the GS that I will add at a later date.

The yanks have been raving about these for years... way back in fact to the early mid 90s.

And justifiably so... they look so much better than the common as muck Remus efforts... And from what I understand are built to last.

i have one on my f650, great exhaust but unfortunatly its split along the welded bracket and gone around the exhaust. :(

Sounds like you got a bad un chap... have you got onto them about it?

I should if I were you... might get a replacement out of them... from what i understand they do guarantee them against faulty workmanship and/or failure in normal use.

mail them direct in australia.. rather than through the importer.

Yep, I'd just get on to them as they support their products. They offer a polishing service too if you ever scratch up one of their end cans. Not free, but have heard it's reasonable. :thumb
 
I've had a Staintune slip-on on my 1200GS for 25,000 kms. At 3250rpm they are supposed to emit the same db as the standard pipe ; it's certainly not noisy unless the right wrist is exercised, and then the harder you accelerate, the "louder" it becomes, although it is never intrusive (and I prefer a quiet-ish bike). When you're on and off the gas in a series of corners, I reckon it sounds like the snarl of a (very large) cat.
It doesn't drone at highway speeds, polishes very well, easy to fit, well made, and considerably lighter than the original. I reckon the grade of stainless is pretty soft, though; they seem quite easy to mark.
