Hi
I have a brand new (free) stock tail pipe for my 1200GSA and have been thinking about getting an akro can, but far too expensive.

So... I am thinking about cutting open my stock pipe and removing 'stuff' as I have been told there is a secondary cat in there (BMW tech told me this).

Anyone tried this?

Please no posts suggesting buying another tail pipe.

The cat is in the header pipes,it's the bulky thing above the centre stand,I replaced my headers and can with Remus items (06 GSA) and as far as I can see there's no cat in the can although it is quite heavy, best mod you can do to the exhaust is change the headers which loses the cat,the bike will run much stronger, have better response and more mid range go-even with the standard can,if you want a little more go and a fruitier exhaust note change the can as well.

Rather than feck around with the standard can, you really would be better off getting a used one off here. I think it maybe difficult to remove all the crap in there and weld te can back up nicely.

I say this because you can replace the OEM can when you sell the bike and get some money back on the aftermarket can.

If it`s the power hike you want, the headers are the way to go:thumb

Thanks all.
I have already removed the CAT from my headers and replaced with a Y piece from user 'Rong' - excellent bit of kit, no welding needed, just a hacksaw :D
I have been looking for a 2nd hand tail pipe but not been lucky enuff to find one.
I have 2 stock tail pipes, keep one - chop one.

I cut mine open last year, half gutted it and then welded back on the 2 stubby pipes at the tail end before welding the end back on, then when you look in the end it looks standard, gives a very nice throaty note and looks standard, no bother with the old bill either.
I do have a standard silencer sitting in my garage, and am now thinking of totally gutting it and seeing how it sounds.
