Hello. BMW has made some technical changes to the year 2017 gearbox. Has someone experience about the new box, is it smoother than before?

It's superb! :thumb2:....but there again, I didn't have any issues with my previous LC's

The new box is lovely though.

Friend of mine recently rode a 2017 RT and commented that the gearbox was much smoother than on his 2014 model

I have a 2017 m.y. R1200RS. The gearchange is a marked improvement over my 2016 GSA, the change is smoother and requires considerably less lever pressure. If they are using the same box for the 2017 GS/GSA, yes it's a better gear change.

It allows/encourages people to change their bikes after a couple of years therefore puts more second hand bikes on the market thus lowering the price. Supply and demand.

Not so. This would only be the case if BMW were the only ones to offer PCP. All manufacturers do, so the potential PCP sales are the same for all. As BMW do not heavily discount (like Triumph for instance), their machines retain a healthy resale value irrespective of how they were purchased. Consequently, the PtEx values also remain high in comparison. :rob

And the mahoosive Ker Lunk into first?

Definitely much better...in fact sometimes it just snicks into first so gently its virtually silent, which is weird as it's not what I've been used to...makes me smile :):)...however I didn't mind the mahoosive ker-lunk  as I knew 1st was well and truly engaged :thumb

Batman, this gearbox 'thing' is a bit confusing since my 2016 Alpine LC has a noticeably better gearbox action than my 2013 model LC. First thing in the morning the selection of first from neutral is silent compared to the 'wake the neighbours' crunch of my 2013. Like you I couldn't believe it since every bike I've had clunked into first, especially first thing in the morning and initially I thought that it was still in neutral. I still check the gear position indicator to convince myself, it's that silent. Subsequent selections of first from neutral are still a bit clunky though but not as bad as my 2013 was when I was embarrassed to select first when traffic lights changed green.

Does your first selection from neutral stay silent subsequently in the ride or does it get a bit noisier?

I suppose I'll have to test ride a 2017 to see whether there are noticeable changes from 2016 to 2017.

PS. I just love the quick shifter.....

Just done about 160 miles on my TB GSA, gearbox is much improved and the first click into 1st in the morning is silent, still get a few clonks here and their but nowt like on my 2014 GSA.

gear change thingy is ok but really just a gimmink IMHO, no good for town riding but when your riding progressively it snicks up nice but you have to be on it ( as much as you can on a GSA )

I have a June 2016 triple black (the GSA TB is nice, but to big for me) and only find selecting first from neutral elicits a clunk. It's the same hot or cold. No jumping forward or anything the poor old early bikes had to endure.. All other changes are subsequently clunk free up and down the box. Finding neutral is first time everytime as well. Sounds very similar to yours. I suspect they had finally learnt how to assemble the gearbox/clutch just in time for the improved box.
I will definitely try a new 2017 model at the next service, but I very happy with mine as it is.
Now, my old R1100RT, that was a clunky box!!

The gear change pro thing I have grown to love, especially the way it blips the engine all by itself on down changes :-).

Sorry, that's utter rubbish. You only get a decent trade-in at a BMW dealer. The GS is a popular bike in the UK and part of the reason is the easily affordable PCP payments. You'd be surprised how few people have £15-16K in cash lying around. Added to worries about warranty not covering the very expensive all-in-one ESA shocks after 30K miles and the lure of a new machine a lot of people chop it in for a new one. As you so succinctly put it, the law of supply and demand - loads more come on the market, making it that much harder to realise a decent second hand price or trade in. Remember when the RT rear shock went down and BMW shipped out loads of GSes as loan bikes that went back into supply at the dealer? I had a GS to trade at that time and not one dealer wanted one. Showrooms are still loaded with 13 and 14 plate GSes, some priced down as low as ex off road skills machines. Already some dealers are going the way of the rest of the bike market with loads of pre-reg bikes to boost sales targets. This has always happened to Honda or Suzuki but they're now knocking out some bikes £1000-£1500 or more off list with zero miles. Rewind 5 years or so and this just wasn't happening.
Now, pop round to your friendly non-BMW dealer with a one-year-old GS and see excellent residuals in action!

I have. 3X gave me an excellent trade-in price against a new Tex which started off my purchase, eventually, of the Iconic. You should try them.

Alp, Gear clunk varies from a quiet snick to little clunk, but to be honest and at the risk of repeating myself, I don't take a lot of notice of whether there is a clunk or not, this is my 5th LC and they have all had excellent gearboxes. I just jump on and ride the bloody thing.

I'm with LBL re the quick-shift, it's okay, but I get a nicer change with the clutch and so that what I tend to use, and to be fair you have always been able to do a smooth clutch-less up-change on the GS-LC by just rolling off the gas a touch and it will snick up a gear without any fuss....not for down changes though!

The clunk is not a gear box issue, it is a clutch issue, but it's absolutely nothing at all to bother about, however the 2017 bike is an improvement and it's excellent!
