hello
I have a 2006 1200GSA and seen some oem mufflers for low prices on flea bay etc
are there any known issues with modifying a standard one to sound more, ahem, fruity?
basically by removing the internal baffles.
thanks in advance!

You don't need to modify the can, you need to replace the headers.
The catalytic converter is what stifles both the power and tone of the system.
Get rid if that and the bike feels and sounds totally different.

People have both gutted the original can, or gutted the cat out of the down pipes.

I had just the can done, and it was excellent. A nice fruitier noise, but it looked stock. Cost me £40.

hi miff.
£40 sounds good, who did that?
i'll also investigate the de-cat as well

do you need to put it all back again when it comes round to mot time ?

You would not need to put the Cat back as emissions do not form part of the MoT test for bikes. Provided the still has *some* baffles left (and no leaks, with all the gases passing through the silencer) you should have no problem with an MoT test.

De catted the standard headers and fitted an Apro end can on an 08 bike.
Made a massive differance, pulls so much lower in the rev band you need to change gear less.

The BMW end can is unbelieveably heavy, if we shipped all the ones removed to China we could fix the steel shortage.

Most local engineering firms are hard up for work mine very pleased to do it and cost £20.

Careful the cat leaves behind a fairly large empty chamber which can cause flat spots then you need to fit a power commander to get rid of the flat spot.

Replace the OEM header and a slip on can:thumb

I've got a Remus Powercone that will fit your bike .... it has a small patch of black paint missing and comes complete with the Remus baffle. I'm about 15 miles from you .... the can is yours for £140 :thumb2

thanks, whats the finish?
but i do have to call my insurance company to check first :augie

insurance companys says as long as its road legal and has BS stamp but not performance enhancing (thats open to alot of debate) i'm ok.

so, i'm interested :)

gaaa
just rang back insurance again and gave them full details of exhaust from remus website where it does state it increases performance (thanks remus). so it does increase the performance and so they wont allow it :( sorry.

also i got the impression (hence why i rang them back to double check) they might be using this as a ruse to invalidate any claims.

looks like modifying the stock (got one off ebay) is my only option atm.

oh my head

cheers, thanks for the head rub :)
on another matter, where's the best place for decent grub in marlborough for bikers??
the pollys tea rooms is so jam packed you cant put your gear down anywhere without dear old ladies disappearing down to the carpet like a premiership footballer hitting the grass in the penalty box!
marlborough is a great meet point for anyone else thinking of visiting wiltshire, some cracking roads nearby

I dunno I never eat there tho there are always bikes parked outside the bar almost opposite the Polly Tea Rooms so I suppose that is always a positive sign :thumb
