I am sure when we first used to go over to France about 10 years ago (I was pillion then) the tolls were free for bikes (you used to have to squeeze up the side of the right hand booth).. or am I imagining it?

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I ordered the map pocket thing but as my husband pointed out all very well but my F650GS doesn't have a magnetic tank so that went back - they were very sweet and refunded the money.
The Kreiger pouch thingie arrived yesterday and I used it this morning for my phone and stuff on a little bimble out. It worked great because when I stopped for petrol I was able just to get my card out of this without having to open the back box to retrieve handbag and purse. I rather like this - the next trick is to work out where there is room to hang it on my handlebars.....
Anyway (stop wittering woman) just wanted to thank you guys for being really helpful and I now have umpteen solutions so can pick whichever suits my mood.

I use one of those 'miser's wallets' with the little tray thing that unfolds. It makes you look really cheap in the shops - but with toll money (only) in it I hand the whole thing over to the guy in the booth and he takes what he needs. No need to count it or take gloves off.
They've all been rather good about it and make it pretty clear what they're taking. He hands it back and I pop it into a jacket or tank bag pocket.

+1 ......I throw all my loose coins in a self seal plastic bag - like the ones Nippy sends all his stuff out in. I just hand over the bag and let the cashier take the right amount, then just put it back in my pocket. Saves all the faffing about getting half undressed and counting coins at the toll. Never been refused yet and you can pay for for any number of bikes at once - handy if you're in a group. The French seem to like bikes, so as long as you throw in a few "bonjours" etc. it always seems to work.

If you had been travelling some years ago during the weekend of the " bol d'or "
24hr endurance race in circuit paul ricard all of the toll booths were open free to motos , no need to stop Paris straight down . ( All speed limits were also cancelled for this w/e )
Personally i find no need to remove gloves just keep plenty of notes and handy change in the pocket of the tank bag . There is very little point in annoying yourself trying to give the correct change , just let them in the booth give you the change back .

Ah - you should have just gaffa taped some steel (large washers would do) onto the underside of the 'tank' . Worked a treat on my Pan Euro.

Of course my top box has my handbag in - i also have spare gloves, a gas powered hot brush (to deal with the cousin IT hair created by the helmet) - a mirror affixed to the lid to aid use of brush and spare earrings incase I lose one when removing helmet. Whaddya mean porn mags? Box is already full with essential stuff
Unfortunately though I am petite god built up my pectoral muscles somewhat so if I put a tank bag on my bike me and the handlebars would be somewhat adrift! Makes buying leathers interesting though - custom made is the only option or I end up either not being able to breathe or having about a foot of leather spare around my waist!

They have now removed those for most.
I like the idea of just handing over the purse and letting them take the cash themselves.
My husband says I should ignore the cars as well and go at my own pace. Last time we went I had only just passed my test and moved up 300cc on the bike instantly so I was in task overload as well. Since that journey involved going over the mountain roads all the way down to Carcassonne I built up a bit of experience and I've done quite a lot of tricky rides since so I might be a bit more chilled when we go this June!

why bother with toll roads
they square off yer tyres, they are boring, very small amounts of twisties,and the normal roads are just as good, leave a little earlier, cos it takes longer,arrive a little later and have a nice slap up meal with the money you save when you get there without squared off tyres.oh and you dont need a change money bag thingy.

we do a lot off the toll roads but usually are travelling quite some distances over short timespans so it helps to get a chunk of the travelling done using the motorway and opening up the bikes, then we can get off the motorway and enjoy the normal roads (for which read farm tracks and mountain passes with my husband in charge of navigation) as well as a nice lazy lunch.
We tend to cover something like 500 miles a day - then spend a couple of days where we get to, riding out from there on the interesting roads and going to see things.

Make the cars wait - if enough bikes do it the French will waiver the toll for bikes, All french bikers take their time, so should you. Ignore the horns
Too right.
I make a point of stopping/glove off/find money/glove on in no great rush at a local toll bridge.
Creates a nice long queue of happy drivers behind me.
Whether the bridge operators get the message or care is another matter.

I always stop, turn off my engine, get off the bike and take ages to get my gloves off. I then take even longer trying to get all my coins together to pay and just before I hand them over I drop a couple so it takes me a bit more time to pick them up. I eventually pay and the barrier goes up. I then put my gloves back on s l o w l y and then get back on the bike. Start and then get going. By this time I have a tidy queue of irate Frenchies behind me and if enough of us do this perhaps they might decide that it is not effective to keep stopping bikes and let them through on a bike lane free of charge like they already do on the Pont de Normandie.

I'll see what I can do. I can't even work the camera so uploading pictures might be a bit beyond me and hubbie is away on his way to cross the desert in Morocco. I'll see if I can locate a teenager to assist - there are three next door
