My wife has lost her sight in one eye, we are hoping to retire early and spend time in Spain and Portugal. Anybody know the law regarding riding-driving with monocular vision.

We know this site well, my wife is waiting for the medical board to return her licence after 6 months., what we don't know is if the rules are different in each country.
As far as I know a UK licence will be accepted throughout the EU (and many other countries) no question.
There are thousands of bods driving around with some medical affliction or other (a friend who lost the site in one eye is just taking her test for the first time)... I have never heard of anyone NOT being able to drive abroad, where they must have a similar proportion of their population in the same unfortunate position.

Seems France is OK, but Spain is a big NO for monocular vision. No mention of Portugal.

Today I received a letter from the Spanish Consulate General, If a UK driving licence is issued (regardless of any medical conditions) it is accepted in Spain.
The Portugese Consulate has had to send off to their DVLA because the wording is very contradictory, they have promised to reply, so it looking very promising for an extended stay in the area.

At last a letter from the Portugese dept of transport.
If we were living in Portugal we would need certificates from a doctor and an optician, as well as taking an extra driving test.
As UK citizens on holiday we have no restrictions above those placed on us by our own licencing authorities.
That's great news and means we can travel to any EU country without restriction.
