Right techies I have a problem (no not the drinking type but will be soon if I don't get my bike sorted). Last week Neil aka Steptoe helped me sort out my throttle cables and carb sync to I would say as close to 110% it has ever been. Fitted the standard pipe and cat back the weekend. Now the bike still runs terrible at 1800-2200 rpm as in it jerks and stutters(could not enrol it into stttuuuttering school due to lack of fees). Put the carbtune back on to check if they have changed and still spot on.

What else could cause the problem?

If the valves are out will it attribute to the problem (They are not noisy at the moment, which can also be a bad thing).
Could my TPS setting be out.
Would it be easier to fit new throttle cables if the possibility is a sticky cable all though I doubt it.
Plugs (replaced them 3000 miles ago with original bosh)
HT Leads (Last resort panic brainwave)

Now I have excatly 8 days left before we leave for Germany next week and of those the only possible time I can spend on the bike is the weekend and the evenings if it does not rain(yeah right). To make things more interesting I still need to sort my back brakes out( they don't exist at the moment) and reconnect my heated grips after exhanging the handlebars the weekend.

Where would you guys start looking for the problem if in my situation?

Thanks

change yer exhaust etc back to how it wass after yer little tune up, if problem vanishes then could it be ??????? the motronic needs a reset

if problem stays start with the cheap bits [leads, plugs, then working your way upto the more expensive options like new tps unit, part ex against a new bike etc]

last option is sell yer tickets for the elephant and wait until the stella rally which will give you ages to suss it:P

The problem is every thing was fine untill I had to exchange the gearbox.
Somewhere along the line something went out with all the stripping and reassembling. The laser exhaust never ran to good but not as bad as after we reassembled the bike. I have checked that the carbs seat properly and not sucking air somewhere and all the obvious things. Part exchange? Yeah I saw a really nice XT 500 in the loot - should be much easier :D

Air leak somewhere?

You sure you put the pipe back on proper - check for gas leakage around injectors and any other gas/can pipage?

A cheap start:(

Probably not alot of help, but its got to be something thats been disturbed or changed.

Check that the fuel line breather [pipes are not trapped - when you reseat the tank into position it is very easy to pinch these which could cause the symptoms you describe. They run out from under the r/h side of the tank back towards the rear passing behind the fixing bolt for the tank. Check in behind the tank bolt to see they are not pinched in there.
Good luck

Thanks dude, I knew it was something like that :D

Gecko I have not checked that, very possible as I did not particular spend time rerouting them nicely like they were.

Thanks

Have you done the ignition on, open the throttle fully a couple of times, to reset the tps bit?.
It might help, the handbook says to do this when the battery has been disconnected.
The little blackbox needs to know where the throttles are or sumfink like that.

changed the gearbox ?

check the crank position sensor for the ignition - open cct / shorted / intermittent ?.

Also, check the coil connections and coils and all the HT side.

it sounds obvious but its something you've disturbed electrical - like a connector not gone back together properly ?

Forget fuel and cables - its not that.

Run through everything that had to be disturbed and reseat it all.

Yep Keith done that a few times to make sure the tps knows what's is cooking. check the breather pipes tonight first thing and go make sure the cables are not caught somewhere. If all else fail there is always fire....

Sounds to me like the throttle postion sensor [onthe outside of your left hand throttle body. this is best set up by the dealer.

Dirk

As I said to you two dudes when you were having issues swopping the gearbox - a match and petrol are never the answer to a problem!

Trust it'll all work through, but I'm f***ing useless on oil heads so I'll be no help at all

Getting closer....

Right boys it was the stupid TPS that was on 0.321 mV so fairly low. Have reset it to 0.371 mV and running like it was before the gearbox stripdown. The TPS setting only took 5 minutes and re-balanced the carbs.
Strange how these things sound way scary untill you take a crack at it with an open mind.

Took a good 2 hours to bleed the back brake abs unit to get it free of air. The back caliper however is still not bled and gave up due to other things on the list that had to be done. Will try the syringe trick tomorrow if I can find one locally.
