Garmin MapInstall - I wonder if they do any testing at all on this software, or just simply release the beta candidate that crashes least often.

Select a map section on map install and you'll see the space-used increment at the bottom of the screen. Click it again - the space counter increments again, click again and it increments again as many times as you care to install the map section.

Lo and behold, when you click 'send maps' it actually sends as many copies as you have clicked.

You couldn't make it up.

That's odd. I have v4.0.4 on Windows 8 and don't have the problem you seem to have. Are you using a Mac or using an earlier version?

I may be misunderstanding what you wrote. But isn't the software just doing what you told it to do? You clicked the one map area many/several times and it then tries to download it many/several times?

Or do I have the wrong end of the stick.

garmin Express is much improved and I would always try to use that first

Looks like you only select the tile once.

To deselect a map tile in MapInstall:

Mac: Click to select / Click again to deselect
Windows: Left-click to select / Right-click to deselect
To deselect multiple map tiles at once, hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac), then click and hold the mouse button and outline all the tiles to be deselected. Release the mouse button to finish the deselect. On Mac computers, deselect all selected maps by clicking Edit in the menu bar and selecting Clear Selection.

No, you have the right end of the stick, but why would you download multiple copies of the same map tile to the gps device?

What is Garmin Express? Can it transfer maps from my Mac to a zumo? i spoke with garmin recently and they told me I should be using MapInstall.

Nope. Click once and it transfers one copy to your Zumo, click again and it downloads another copy ad infinitum

Don't you have to click once on each tile you want & then transfer all your chosen tiles in one go?

But I don't think it transfers maps from the desktop to the device - or does it?

You can transfer like that, but, depending on the size of the SD card, you might want to transfer part part of the full set. That's where it gets stupid

It is transferring maps from desktop to the device.

Worth watching.

In which case I guess it doesn't work with old technology like a Zumo 550? Basecamp/MapInstall connects to the Zumo straight away, but GarminExpress never sees it.

The really stupid thing about mapinstall is that it has no information about what is already installed on the Zumo. I just came back from a trip to find that some maptiles were not installed. AFAIK the only way to get the missing tiles installed is to reinstall all of them (first deleting the correctly installed tiles, or reformatting the SD card).

Unfortunatly this software is so flaky that installing all of the map tiles never completes and you have to install them, say, a country at a time with the ever present possibility of missing some.

Which is where I came in:blast

In fact, I've gone bckwards - now the SD gard in the Zumo doesn't show up in the list of devices to transfer maps to in MapInstall - all I have is the Zumo and assorted SD cards plugged into my computer.
the garmin SD card is visible in finder, but not in mapinstall.

I used to think MS was the epitome of dysfunctional software, but Garmin are the new prizeholders.

Tried to get garmin on the phone, but after an hour and ten minutes listening to their music I gave up.

So after multiple reboots of the Zumo, I got it to recognise the Zumo. After a few more reboots, I even got it to recognise the installed SD card.

I 'updated' and waited the 90 mins or so for things to be transferred and, lo and behold, nothing had changed. The tiles that were missing were still missing.

I'm not even sure that Express has the ability to transfer maps from a computer to a Zumo - it seems to be an 'update' tool, not a map transfer tool.

Dont think Garmin Express does small updates, it seems to download & install a complete new map version which is why it take many hours to complete. :blast

It does install maps onto your device and/or computer. :blagblah

So a 40 min hold got me the answers.

Express can't transfer Europe maps from a computer to a Zumo 550. Apparently it only works for the UK - go figure.

Garmin recommend using MapInstall to transfer maps from a computer to a Zumo 550. The issue with multiple selections of maptiles downloading multiple copies of the map is a known bug they haven't bothered to fix.

MapInstall doesn't know what is installed on the Zumo, so there is no way to copy just the missing tiles.

In order to avoid missing tiles, they recommend transferring all the maps in one go. Good luck with that.

In fact, its the wrong tool for a Zumo 550 (legacy hardware apparently)

Seems Express cannot send maps to the SD card in your device. http://support.garmin.com/support/s...caseId={a209e880-9319-11e2-65d0-000000000000}

A quick search on google shows a lot of 550 users are using Express. The reason Express cannot send Europe to your device is it wont all fit on without an sd card which it does not support but the UK map will fit without an SD card.

A lot of guys on the zumoforum website use Express with 550's & they are mostly in the USA.

As I had surmised.

Struggling to see the benefit of Express for a 550.

I like to have all my maps installed all the time.

Express might work for you if you didn't load all regions. As you say Mapinstall is your only option.

Don't know if this helps but the only way I can install the whole of Europe maps is to use Garmin Express to load said map to Base camp then use map install to load from Base Camp to 8gb sd card in device I.e my Zumo 550. This is the only trouble free way I've found.
