I read last week that if I didn't register my unit which has version 8 that I will not qualify for free V9 download from Garmin. Am I correct or mistaken?

My mate recently bought Quest 1 with V6, should he return it to retailer or will he also qualify for free V9 download.

Our interest in V9 is that we both live in Ireland and V9 is allaged to have Ireland included.

I suspect above questions have been previously answered but I'm educationally disfunctional and I need a simple answer so maybe some good soul will put my mind at rest by telling me I haven't bought a pig in a bag!!!

Previously if you hadn't registered before the release date of the new version (release date isn't when it's available BTW, CN v9 has a release date of 1st Sept 06) the you'd get a free upgrade to the current version.

When I purchased my 2nd hand Quest from eBay early last year I tried to register it via myGarmin and to my surprise it seemed to acknowledge me as the 1st owner (original owner must have not registered). Despite it having City Select v6 I got a free upgrade to City Nav v8 which was nice.

Some buyers have held of registering until a new version of the mapping comes out to take advantage of this. However, I've heard mention that Garmin are now asking for a copy of the purchase receipt to base the date on. Not sure if that's true of not mind you.

If you purchased new after 1st Sept 06 then you'll qualify, if before but not registered until after then you'll have to suck it and see.

Failing that if you both have Quests rather than one Quest and a Quest 2 then you can probably get away with sharing an upgrade (about £45) as you can get one more unlock code for a 2nd specified device (you need serial no, registering it may prevent you being able to do this as it'll be under another name).
