Most people can complete an overtake without having to go through applied trigonometry mathematics and ballistic calculations while paying a yearly fee and wearing white helmet and high viz vests.

By all means do the course. Learning is always good.
But who cares (or should care) about the association/membership. That's not making you better. Hours and many, many miles in the saddle with your head switched on are.

Why can they not just include 3yrs of membership into the cost when passi g your test, then when and if you wish to retain your qualification charge for another 3yrs on re test.
Easier for them to keep track off and must be cheaper.

I was an examiner for RoSPA and IAM for years and only managed to get two complaints in that time.

One was because I failed a bloke who displayed absolutely no technique at all, in fact his ride was like a Sunday afternoon bimble with his Granny sitting pillion. He actually took so long that he didn’t complete the test course, and didn’t look like he was ever going to, and on debrief he declared that he rode like that because he believed in tyre and fuel conservation. Everything I covered on debrief he said “I wasn’t taught that” so I suggested his tutor contact me. He didn’t of course, he complained instead saying my riding was dangerous.

The other was a very nervous lady who drove at very slow speeds in the 30’s causing others to overtake her, and took umbrage when I suggested she ‘go with the flow’ rather than being a mobile obstruction.

I seem to remember someone on here who was obsessed with the same - tyres and fuel - but there's surely no way he'd ever get involved with RoSPA and if he did he'd just end up whingeing about it.

So the OP is moaning about a bit of paper that has no legal standing (afaik),

gives no real tangible benefits ( financial )

and is reality is just bragging rights , down the pub or bike meet on how good or bad, he she, they them are at riding ?

Unless the OP is an assessor/ tester / examiner, and it's needed as part of there job

Its simple you want it / need it = pay on time - you dont want it need it = dont pay

Its the Bikers equivalent of a Gold Star everyone wants one, and when you get one .... ermmmm

If it is who I think it is (I don't know him nor have I ever met him) but I believe he failed his Masters (or didn't get the result he wanted) and put in a complaint against both his Masters examiner (an Area Manager who I have met and found to be very agreeable) and his volunteer Mentor. He didn't get what he wanted so launched a campaign against the IAM via his video channel, where there are many videos like this.

Can't see the problem. 60 days grace is good. Lots of businesses fail through late payers. It's probably an automated service that prevents individuals wasting their time chasing people for money. Simples.

Why add a layer of bureaucracy to something very simple? Cough-up on time or within 60 days and nothing happens. Cough on day 61 or later and there’s a penalty.

Look at it another way King Rat, why should you (who pays on day one, I assume) subsidise lazy bikermates, who pay up to 364 days late?

That just involves riding where the torque and power curves converge and maintaining a steady speed, instead of point and squirt. 33,000 miles out of my X Country rear tyre (16 year old Michelin Anakee 3 that apparently was going to kill me when I put it on ) By keeping smooth and steady, and in a highish gear, fuel also goes a long way. The bike and engine also last longer - 334,000 miles on my R100RS without any major engine work, just servicing, still on original clutch and even wheel bearings. Long distance at steady away - like going from here in Uttoxeter to Lake Como for the day. I left early Friday morning, got to Bellagio that night. Worked all day on the water Saturday, gala dinner Saturday night at Villa d'Este, Sunday had breakfast, waved the boats away and headed for home, in my bed by 03.30 that night. No need to ride fast, just steady.

It’s pretty much certain that the only person he would agree with is himself. He must have been a joy to tutor, test, and critique.

I was once allocated by RoSPA to test a local rider who had successfully completed his Masters. When I called to arrange the dates he told me I wasn’t qualified to test him… I wonder if they’re related?

Many years ago I was a HondaMAC Regional Coordinator/Instructor and had 8 ex-Job Class 1 motorcyclists and 1 Police Advanced Instructor in my group, and took the opportunity to go out with all of them. There was no way I was going to pass up on free training. It was a great experience and I learnt loads… including the fact that there’s better riders than me out there.

However, whilst working on the Honda stand at the NEC one year I spoke to a bloke who had just bought a new Pan. This entitled him to a free 2-day course which I mentioned to him, only to receive the response “I’m an IAM Observer, I don’t think there’s anything you could teach me”
With an attitude like that I suspect he was right…

All they have done is spell out (very plain language) what’ll happen if you DON’T pay an annual subscription within 60 (yes, sixty) days AFTER its due date. They are not threatening to kill anyone. You, being a good soldier, will have coughed up on day one, or close to. So you’ll not be affected, The sun will still rise in the east and set in the west and you’ll still be able to enjoy tinned peaches on the M5, trust me.

RoSPa IAM etc all start out as brilliant ideas ( and they are) and then get bigger and bigger to the point of it becomes big business and all that goes with it

Plus of course the politics within the organisation

I pay mine by direct debit, both IAM & RoSPA.

I also pay to be a member of a local group.

The whole lot costs the square root of next to nothing. I get CPD, triannual retest, plus a lot of enjoyment from my local RoADAR. We train lots of people who aren’t riding gods, the like of which frequent this forum, they benefit greatly from the new skills.

It’s also a social event with ride outs and technical/social events.

But if you don’t like it, vote with your feet.
