Morocco ferry advice please

Need some advice on best ferry crossing please

We are planing two weeks from end of October

We want a ferry crossing with the least hassle and something you can just turn up and wait for the next one. Has anyone tried the Malga or Almeria crossing to Nador?. From all reports Algeciras to Ceuta is expensive and manic.

Do you have to book any of these ferries in advance?

We did Algeciras to Ceuta June 2009 and it was 130 Euros return. We had thought about booking from the UK but it was 148 Euros so it turned out cheaper just to turn up. Very easy and relaxed once we got past the fixers and got to the Ticket Office on the left as you enter the port (ask a Policeman they are very helpful).

Tarifa to Tanger is very easy. I had never been to Morocco before, but had absolutely no problem figuring out where to go, etc. and Tarifa is a decent enough little town to spend the night. I did not book in advance for either direction, just showed up and bought a ticket. The ferry ride itself is very short as well. I am not sure if this ferry still runs, however, or if it has been rerouted to the new Tanger-Med port.

Not from my experiance, it's about as manic as dover calais.

Ferries

Almeria to Mellilla was 170 Euro return per bike/rider with a reclining seat in May this year. Its a good crossing, overnight, if you are heading down to Erfoud/Merzouga. Algeciras to Ceuta is cheaper in my experience, and there are deals to be had as there is competition amongst the ticket agents. In Almeria the price is fixed by the ferry company, and the few agents there will not discount.

The quickest way across is Tarifa to Tangiers, It is more of a jet that a ferry. Any other route will take you hours and on ferries very slow with little mod cons.

The ferry companies on all three of the usual crossings operate the same high-speed ferries. Some also use traditional ferries but these tend to be used mainly by freight.

Tarifa to Tanger (Ville) used to be the quickest crossing but the new Algeciras to Tanger Med crossing is now the quickest, there are more crossings per day, and the port procedures are far better.

Tarifa ferries will start using Tanger Med in October and judging from the map will then be the quickest again.
