Morocco: Tire Recommendations

I'm planning on riding from Germany to Morocco in the April/May timeframe. I have a 08 GSA and am looking for tire recommendations. The bike currently has Metzeler Tourance tires. I'm looking at replacing them with either Heidenau K60s or Mitas E-07s.

Does anyone have experience with both of these tires?

What are your recommendations?

Either of those or TKCs, get whatevers on offer as theres little difference in real world riding, if pushed Id go TKC but thats only because I know them best

it depends on what kind of roads/tracks you'll be doing whilst down there.
TKC's if you're planning on venturing off road, Tourances if you're sticking ( ) to the tarmac.

If you want to do the trip on one set of tyres, i would recommend K60's. They will good on the tarmac and more than adequate on the dirt and piste's. TKC's are better on dirt but don't have anything like the tarmac mileage.

I'm looking at a tire that I can use to get me from Germany to Morocco and back. I'm looking at one that can work on-road and off-road.

I just don't think the TKC will make it the entire trip.

I wonder if anyone has experience the Mitas E-07.

I've run K60's to Maroc and back twice now, once solo and once two up.

Surprisingly good on tarmac and more than adequate on Moroccan pistes, even when loaded with two of us and all our camping gear
The sodding things wouldn't actually wear out and I ended up replacing them well before they needed to be just because I wanted sticky road tyres back on the bike at the time.

Well, we've told you the K60's will do it and I have to say I've heard the Mitas is as good but I don't know for sure. I think GerryC uses them and rates them highly.

Be aware that Mitas is currently recalling 19" E-07 tyres due to a defect.

The tyre sizes subject to recall are:

110/80-19 M/C 59T E-07 TL MI
100/90-19 M/C 57T E-07 TL MI
110/80-19 M/C 59T E-07 DAKAR TL MI

Under extreme conditions the affected tyres can suddenly loose air pressure.

Customers can determine whether their tyre is subject to recall by checking the brand name “MITAS”, tyre name “E-07,” inscription “tubeless” and DOT codes ranging from 0111 through to 4812, on the tyre sidewall. No other Mitas tyres are affected.

SGT Bilco. Got it on the TKCs. I've heard otherwise regarding on-road longevity but they do have an outstanding reputation overall.

I put on a set of K60s in September rode Santander - Morocco - Caen back to Dorset - 4,500 miles and I'm still on the same tyres now. Best compromise for tarmac and varied conditions. I am a convert.

I too rode on K60's through Spain to Morocco, round the pistes and then all the way back through France. Great tyre and still going strong at 10,000 miles on my F8GS.

I have no problem with TKCs usally get 5-6k out of a rear, even riding on the black stuff, I think its a greatly underated bit of rubber.

Back in 2007 Araspitfire rode on his 1200GS from holland to morocco and back and did a ten day tour with lots of off road on TKC's without any problems.

Not sure if it's 'good form' to comment on Avatars (and definitely ), but full compliments to you, Steptoe, delightful Avatar. I'm assuming 'the curent Lady Steptoe'? No doubt, BMW marketing wil be in touch soon with royalty payments - you deserve them.

K 60's for me...put them on prior to going to Maroc in April 2012, great performing tyre on dry roads and dusty trails...and in the sand; and, performed well in the wet too (did the Iron Butt ride in 2012 in the fecking pouring rain).

The other thing, was that I got a puncture in the rear tyre just outside Marrakesh on the Maroc trip last year, and the tyre wall was so damned strong, it was @ circa 40 mph that I felt a little wobble. I got it repaired in Marrakesh for a £5, and it's still going strong today.

i dont think they are that well known in UK, on my usual tyre supplier websites i can only find one here that stocks them and that appears to be limited sizes only?

are they a specialist off road type tyre manafacturer?

No experience of the Mitas E-07 but I've done 400,000km on TKC80s. The longest trip on a single set of tyres was UK to Senegal and back on a 1200GSA, so Germany to Morocco and back should be no problem.

High speed motorway sprints will trash any tyres quickly, so either keep the speed down below 120kph or carry the new tyres with you and change when you get to Morocco.

I am not sure which part of Germany your setting off from, a couple of years ago I rode from Southern Germany (Ulm) to Morocco and back on one set of TKC80's, they didn't have much life remaining on return but I figured once back on mainland Spain I could stop at any dealer and get a road tyre fitted to finish the journey. Maybe if your departing from Hamburg it would be expecting too much and indeed if your carrying a passenger it would reduce the tyre life significantly.
