er, yes, but at least one of them seems to know quite a bit about the place...anyway in a subsequent post he clarified that the main threat seems to be having rocks thrown, etc. which i'm not too worried about...

I kinda think that there must be trouble to attract trouble. Has anyone come across these dangerous fundamentalists in Morocco?

I've only ever spent a few weeks in Morocco and have felt hassled, and "aware", but i never felt in danger.

I reckon i would go with US plates if I had too.

Yes, but Tim was spot on in his answer when he mentioned Casablanca...that's where the idiots who set of the bombs in 1993 that killed 41 people came from.....though they were aimed at the Jewish community there.

Casablanca has nothing going for it apart from its name- it really is a nasty nasty shytehole I'm afraid, and we don't go anywhere near it unless we absolutely have to (collecting spares, there are some large parts suppliers for BMW, KTM etc there)

I wouldn't go anywhere near the shantytown or tower block areas there.
 
+1 on Fanum's evaluation of Casablanca. I always wanted to visit after being a fan of the 1960s TV series Crane with actor Patrick Allen, but when I eventually saw the place I was extremely disappointed.

On a total tangent, Sam Kydd who also starred in the series spent most of WWII in the same Stalag XX-A POW camp in Poland as my father-in-law.

'Bidon' as in bidonville means tin or can.

'Ça c'est du bidon' means 'that's a load of bull' which amply describes that thread. :)

The Islamic groups and the Justice and Development party are stronger in Morocco than the government would like people to think, but they involve themselves primarily in internal matters and internal power struggles.
 
Thanks for all of the replies, haven't changed my plans, will be heading down there in May with my US plates. Had already planned to skip Casablanca; I'm sure I will have lots more questions, so bear with me...
 
why don't you take the plates off, and if questioned say they fell off or a quick spray with WD40 and let the dust do the rest. If questioned look thick, forelorn and helpless.

A look and state of mind I don't have to put on.

OK point taken, but i guess this area of Casablanca is just an area to avoid, regardless of whether you have US plates or not.
