first full day in the colmar area we toured the wine route taking in the beauty of all the villages along the route. in no particular order they included
Kayserberg
Turckheim
Obernai
Riquewihr
Pfaffenheim
Guebwiller
Ribeauville
on the second day in the same area we decided to do the route de cretes going from north to south and then to call in at colmar and have a wander around little venice.
these next few photos are not of a place of great beauty but of a place of great suffering and cruelty, This is natzweiler struthof it was the only concentration camp established by the Nazis on present-day French territory, a very sobering place.
our last day at colmar was to be spent with friends we were meeting up with in oppenhau in the black forest, We then moved onto Verdun, we had been there last year but missed a few things that we could pull in on this trip, one of them was the fort du verdun and the other was the Douaumont ossuary although we had seen this last year it was covered in scaffolding and was being cleaned.
Even though i had been here before, the effect it had on me was exactly the same and even just looking at those two pictures makes me well up inside.
over 16000 bodies buried and over 130000 underneath the ossuary. i cannot find words to describe this.
the last place we would visit, fort verdun. at the time one of the biggest ww1 fortifications on the western front, well worth the 4 euro entrance fee.
Well after all that, all that was left to do was the run from verdun to calais and calais to home and it was all over.
in all the time we were away, 21 days, we had 25 minutes of rain that we were actually riding in , and that was it.
we did 3479 miles used used 66 gallon of fuel,
the pictures are just a snapshot of what we did, there was a lot more.
hope you all enjoyed them,
