HI folks

what the penalty if any if you don't get your MOT done in time ?

mines due in Jan but with work commintments and the icy weather I'm not to sure when I'll get the MOT done in time ?

cheers

If you keep the bike off road, no penalty.

If you do use it with an expired MOT then your insurance cover is invalidated.

Don't know what the penalty is but no mot/no insurance = not good.

Suggest you take the bus.

Your insurance should still be valid without the MOT providing you have a prearranged MOT appointment.

Do yourself a favour though, get your tax and MOT due far apart, that way if you don't get the MOT done, but are not using it, just having it parked up, then the tax disc will still show that it's valid, and you have time to get the mOT before the tax is due!

Mind you just had a thought... all the MOT stations are data linked to the DVLA computers for record keeping... Mind you the system doesn't work that well....

My LandRover didn't exit, and couldn't be entered as it isn't a 90 series or a 2.5L... The MOT man had to enter all the details by hand into the system.

My brother has a different car according to the DVLA, which once the details were corrected, he was given a fail... went back the day later with a minor fix completed only to be told that the details of his car weren't on the system at all. Totally screwed up waste of time... and that was the opnion of the testers!

If your MOT has expired and your bike is stolen, they will automatically deduct a % from the assesment. In my case it was 10%, and the assesor said I was lucky. "Some insurance companies may not pay out at all" :(

A motor vehicle can not be driven on a road without a MOT certificate unless it is travelling to or from a pre-arranged MOT. The offence is non endorsable so therefore no penalty points if you are stopped. Your insurance would still cover you if you were involved in an accident, however they may take legal action to reclaim any money they have put out if your vehicle does not have the required documentation to be on a road in the first place.
Hope this helps.

So why don't you get the MOT done this month? Just because an MOT isn't due doesn't mean you can't get one done. It can be post dated about 1 month I seem to remember. Otherwise it will just get an earlier expiry date than the other one would have had.

Mike

You're right, you can get it done a month in advance. I do it every year for my car.

I'm actually hoping to get it done on Mon as thats the only free time I'll have till end of Jan06, however the weathers starting to turn a bit icy up here in bonnie scotland and I already had a near miss in the car today skiding on black ice I don't really want to be doing that on the bike, so If I could get away with it till Feb or even March that would be better.

If I declared the bike "off road" SORN I think it's called doesn't that excluded you from having to get the MOT done ?

cheers

Insurance in not invalid for no MOT, only no license. This is a common scare story. However if you have an accident and it's partially down to mechanical failure, insurance company will get arsey.

If your bike has no mot and you're not going to use it anyway, don't worry about it until you want to put it back on the road. Worrry about something useful instead such as rain forest deforestation or third world debt. ;)

Correct.

Er.........Incorrect, surely......

The SORN is just about the road tax, nothing to do with the MOT.

As said earlier in the thread, if the vehicle's off the road it doesn't need an MOT, whether it's subject to a SORN or not is irrelevant :nenau

Mike

28 days before expiry date ! :thumb

I can't remember ever being asked by an insurance comp to see my mot :nenau

Yeah but, no but....

It's a bit chicken and egg actually. If you don't have an MOT you can't tax the vehicle. If you can't tax the vehicle then the only option you have is to make a SORN declaration. SORN only relates to road fund licence not to MOT. Roddy doesn't say if his tax and insurance expire around the same time, nor does he say if his bike is kept on a public road.

If you don't have either tax or an MOT you can't keep a vehicle on a public road.

If you don't have tax then you must SORN or get fined.

If you have tax but no MOT then you can't use the vehicle on the road. SORN isn't necessary because the vehicle is taxed.

(being sober on a Saturday night is a real bastard!)

Basically theres nothing to worry about,

the bike is taxed till Aug06 insurance is up Nov06, bikes kept in a garage, so I can delay the MOT till mid to end of Feb to make it a bit easier regarding the weather,

cheers for all the advice.

have a good christmas one and all
