Many years ago I acquired a 1978 Moto Guzzi Convert which is currently stripped down after the frame was powder coated.

It’s now at the top of the project pile, and I need to start sorting out the shopping list.

I have a bare crankcase and rear bearing mount, plus the convert front cover/hydro pump.
I also have a good dizzy and a pair of carbs. The barrels and pistons were in poor condition.

My dilemma is whether to buy a full motor or a good used crank and rods / heads plus new barrels and pistons.

Guzzibits have a used motor for £600 - can anyone comment on the buying from Guzzibits ?

At the time, I was a member of the Moto Guzzi UK club forum, however it appears that you now need a paid membership to join the forum.

There are many online manual sites, ‘my old tractor’ has all of the factory workshop manuals.

Question - is there value in a £25 MGCUK membership, beyond the limited forum access ?

I will post a WTB for a 950 round cover engine, if you have any early Tonti parts for sale please let me know.

I'm in the BMW club and the Guzzi club. Very similar IMO. Club magazine, website with forum, and a few benefits...

Well, it’s £12 or whatever to be a paid up subscriber here, and you get access to otherwise hidden parts of the forum, or for just about twice that you can join the Guzzi club, get a magazine 4x pa, access to a forum full of of wisdom and possibly bits for sale that you really need, discounts at a few Guzzi specialist place (sadly not gutsibits) and a few other things. Both communities will offer you support, encouragement, advice when you need it most. You pays your money and makes your choices.

Up to you. Me…. I pay both. I think both are worth it but in different ways.

I'm a member of the Guzzi club but don't really use their forum.
I do like the magazine but that's about my only benefit really although I try and support these owner clubs where I can.

Given the obscurity of the parts you need, I think you need to cast your net as widely as you can!

Maybe start with Guzzi Riders and see how you go?

I'm a member of the Guzzi Club - don't really use any benefits and seldom on their forum. I joined partly to start attending the monthly meetings, but weekday evenings are hard to make time so I've never been to one ! With the exception of this one - most forum interactions have migrated to Facebook I've found. I look in on the Guzzriders forum occasionally but was drawn here a there is a lot of good Guzzi content and sound folks. Don't tell anyone but I didn't even contemplate owning a Beemer when I joined - had 2 classic MG's and an old Z1000 at the time.

As for parts supply Gutsibits are good and helpful on the phone if you need to chat about potential parts you are interested in. I've also used Stein Deinse in Germany who provide a good service as do TM Lamers in the Netherlands. Further afield in the US, Crusty Cycles are good reliable suppliers as are Harpers. When I had a Nuovo Falcone I also got a few things from a couple of Italian Guzzi specialists - armed with Google translate for their websites. Can't remember who I shopped with for the bits from Italy, but a bit of searching under the right Italian words usually works.

Good luck finding what you need.
