Moto scan app scotland calibrate fuel computer after GSA tank upgrade

Morning,

So few months back I wrote a post on various platforms and can’t go the life of me find the one.

Anyway, it was regards using the moto scan app to try and calibrate the computer to recognise my bike now has the 33ltr fuel tank. Someone in Edinburgh was in touch to offer to try this for me as I only have Apple and GS911 and no motoscan.

don't big tank bikes just get the float ?

the calibration is just to ensure that empty is empty - its usually done off the bike and must be with a totally dry strip....

No only the twin cam gsa's from 2010,2011 ,2012 and 2013 had the float

I think must be linked to the on board computer somehow. I did the exact same tank change but my bike was basic spec with no OBC. Had no such issue but was expecting it tbh.

the very early 2004 GS before trip computers had a float option - but it was a different set up - so of course somehow those ones could manege to cope

Wasn't me, I'm near Edinburgh and have Motoscan though. Can't recall a setting to change the amount of fuel, just the calibrate the strip. Mine won't calibrate alas, seems another fault has reared its ugly head to stop it and no one knows how to fix it on the Web!!

Thanks, think it’s basically a setting that allows to change a tank setting and was going to give it a shot.

There isn’t anything on the gs911 settings about it..

there was a different bracket to attach at the top of the tank... but it looks the same on the schematics

this says the strip is the same... if so its the tank shape and fuel level that will populate a given height on the strip - unless that different bracket holds the strip in a different place by the filler neck

Mines the float, all came with the tank and seems to work fine.

The little fuel level lines work fine it’s just the miles to empty that’s wrong. When you fill up that states 150 miles. It should say like 300 if I remember correctly. Do I just need to tell the ZFE that it’s this longer range.

I got 309 miles out of it last time and for majority of that it showed 150 miles until I did around 150 miles then it started to come down.

It’s no biggy as I just reset the second trip when I fill her up.

My GSA came with fuel strip. Then for a few years I replaced it with a float (with Hank's converter), then now I have one of the alleged new strips, again.
Strips are the same, floats differ between GSA and GS.

I don't remember seeing a setting for tank size in Motoscan... will check again.

When I looked on Motoscan I couldn’t find anything that directly related to fuel tank capacity, I did however find a setting in the KOMBI coding section which gives bike model selection which may influence the range calculations. I’ll try to remember to check when I’m back home at the weekend.

thats a good point...

because you have fitted the big tank the bikes trip computer needs to know to do its maths on a larger volume of fuel...

I guess that has nothing at all to do with the whether its a strip or a float

there's a confusing post of the GS911 forum where an owner describes finding a setting that's likely related to your need... my response was that I thought it was about low level warning light... but your post has reminded me the bike needs to know how much its could have in there to start its maths from a new base

if you fill it with 37 litres but the trip computer is still calculating on a 20 litre size tank will the bike think you have put in 20/37 aka only 54.0 % of a tankful, that creates a range circa 122 miles - not the usual 227 of a full small tank or 419 of a big tank bike

Working my way through the menus there are some settings as follows;

Indicator auto off time 10 s
Indicator auto off distance 210 m
Rear wheel circumference 1903 mm
Speed sensor 48 tooth sensor
Fuel tank capacity

Clicking on the dialogue box adjacent to Fuel tank capacity shows the following settings to choose from;

8L
9L
10L
13L
15L
16L
19L
20L
37L

I was wondering exactly what effect selecting any of these capacities might have?

Reason I ask is mine is set to 8L by default and yet I have a 24L tank which is not even selectable from the dropdown.

Haven't got round to measuring the Rear wheel circumference or counting the teeth on the speed sensor yet...

but again we get a lack of clarity as his bike's (not a GS) manual says his tank size is not one listed on the Hex tool

Usable fuel level approx 24 litre
Reserve level 4 litre
